my efc is 23519 and my mom is having a difficult time trying to find a way to pay for college.my college that i want to go to is 34,000 and i have recieved 5,500 in unsubsidized loans so far. my question is , as of now, how much should i expect to pay for college?like an estimate.... do i just subtract the 5,500 from the 23519? or the 5,500 from the 34,000?

thank you!

Your subtract the 5500 from the 34000 and given that your EFC is 23519 you may not receive any more in FA - few colleges meet all need without leaving a gap. Your need is 34000 - 23519 so $10,481. By giving you loans of $5500 you have a gap of $4981. You may not get anything else in FA. You and your mother may be able to take out additional loans but you really want to be carefulnot taking out too much in loans over 4 years.

Was that loan in your fa package? It sounds like that loan subtracts from the total cost. What school is this

You’d need to get a full aid award from the college. If that $5,500 loan is all they’ll be giving you, then, yes you would have to pay the balance ($34,000 - $5,500) somehow. Some schools, however, will notify you of federal aid and/or loans and/or workstudy first. Then later they’ll let you know if you’ve been awarded any scholarship or grants from them. (My daughter’s school does it this way.) So you may find out in the next month or two that you’ll get some institutional aid, too, in addition to the loan.

You’d have to call the FA office at the college and ask them if that unsub loan is the final aid award and the total you can hope to receive for next year.

The EFC doesn’t really mean much of anything, except it determines whether a student is eligible for certain forms of federal aid. It doesn’t mean it’s what you’ll have to actually pay for college.

Did you apply to any cheaper schools

hi! thank you so much for responding!

wow. this is sooo stresssful.

and this is for the university of central florida and i am out of state so i will have to pay more than in state students however it is my number 1 school so i really hope i dont have to go to the cheaper schools i applied too. furthermore, i just saw the 5500 loan in my financial aid online which is unofficial. i believe the aid package will come within the next few weeks! but i will deff. call up the office for more information. do you think i might be able to recieve more aid? or do you think my efc is on the higher end?

OOS publics aren’t usually very good at giving aid to OOS students since they can’t often meet need of their own students.

Why is UCF your number one school?

What other schools did you apply to?

What are your stats?
