^ That just made my day. :)

hahah I didn’t make that up, hun but I do think it’s hysterical
captures the sentiment perfectly

Ahaha, I just applied to Yale today. Asian/IND all day baby.

Oh darn, I was about to get started.

from now on, pigs declares “discriminasian” to be used in CC posts in place of “discrimination”

I think that argument is well alive and raging on the other thread =P

hahahaha thank god you didnt

Actually I agree with you–that first language question is a bit confusing.

On every form that I have had to fill out, I have put English as my first langauge.

But on the Common App form, it specifies that first language is the langauge you spoke first.

However, that means that on my entire common app, there is no place where it indicates that I can speak English well (on primary language, I put the same as my first language).

Because of that, Yale might want me to take TOEFL or something which might lead to some confusion?

When my dad was reading my app, he immediately asked me why I didnt put English as my first language, and I told him that the Common App instructions told me to put my firsrt language that I spoke. However, if my dad thought that, some Yale admissions officer might think that, which would be a problem…

Besides, on most college websites for freshman admissions, I have read “If English is not your “first language”, you must take the TOEFL…”…well according to my Common App, English is not my first language.

Thanks guys! What happened was, somehow I managed not to see the little question marks next the question. So, after consulting wikipedia, the internet, my parents, my guidance counselor, and a whole bunch of other sources, I followed others’ advice and stupidly put English as my native language even though I wasn’t even born in an English speaking country and didn’t even put English as my primary language spoken at home. My answer must have seemed so weird to whoever ended up reading my application. Oh well.

^Well actually

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/812702-need-toefl.html

this person put Chinese as his first language (because of native) and not English and now they want him to take the TOEFL…

Anyways, xrCalico23, what did you put for language you spoke at home (because if you didnt put english for both, they might actually ask you to take the TOEFL or something)…

I dont think theres a question mark there for adcoms to see what is meant by that…

Can I just say that this thread makes me ridiculously happy?
Asian pride w/o serious AA bashing? YES.

And to answer the question, I checked Chinese for ethnicity, put Chinese as first language, and English as language primarily spoken. My parents usually speak Chinese, but they’re both fluent in English, and my brother and I usually speak/reply in English.

I didn’t even think about the TOEFL repercussions of putting Chinese as first language…

hecks yeahh :]] It seems we’re the second-most-represented group of Asians…on this thread, at least.

I checked the box. Because my last name sounds somewhat hispanic, I filled out the ‘optional’ section so I could let my schools know that I am not :P

^ Wouldn’t that be a bad thing for you?

I checked the Asian box and specified “Korean”. Similar reason as most of you, I have a distinct-ish name and I didn’t want to come across as trying to hide things.

My last name actually sounds hispanic…maybe I shouldn’tve checked the box of doom haha

whats your last name???

and that was very noble of you
if that were me, I wouldve changed my first name to carmelita and ran with it ;)

@Stupefy: i’d be a guadaloupe!!

@evertheoptimist: spanish conquest aftermath? i know a miss fernandez who’s as filipino as they get.

I didnt check the box even though my last name is not asian sounding at all

Asian Indian!
But when I was filling out my applications before I made the replicated version to send to Yale, I didn’t even notice the race box, kinda glazing over it, and when I saw it when I was filling out Yale, I questioned myself on whether I wanted to say it.

It wouldn’t obviously be given away, as my name is only distincly indian if you know it, and though my dad was born in India, my mom was born in Africa and is a citizen of Canada. So if anything, I might be mixed to them?

And I’m sure if it really comes to it, I could write a scathing essay about how my race has not had any effect on who I am, and how economic diversity would be a better indicator of diversity on a campus than racial diversity. Ehh…
