My heart has been set on this college... but is it really the right one for me?

In the past few months, I’ve basically set my heart on going to Georgetown. There are only a few setbacks, and ANY input on my questions would be amazing.

3/4 of the time I hear that the Catholic prescence is not noticable and that its Jesuit roots are good academically but do not affect you outside of that. I am a Jewish girl, and a heavily Catholic university would not be for me. Am I right to believe the Catholic prescence is small?

I want a school with a very workhard/playhard mentality, but I am unsure if Georgetown is more workhard/playlittle. Is there a party scene? More chill, laid back is good, as long as students there still like to have fun.

I am fairly liberal, and close-minded conservatives would drive me nuts. I’ve heard that Georgetown leans right slightly, but is there still a large conservative population where I will feel as though I am the minority?

Thank you!

I've only been here for a little over over 2 weeks but I'll try to answer your questions based on what I've seen so far:

It's very small. Other than the fact that you'll find a cross somewhere in all the classrooms and you'll see a priest walking around on occasion, it's easy to forgot that Georgetown has anything to do with Catholicism. You'll meet tons of other Jewish people (there's even a Jewish "frat" that's popular here) and won't have to worry about feeling pressured by other religions or anything like that.

This is kind of a difficult situation to explain. If you had asked last year, it's say it was definitely a work hard/play hard kind of college. But this year there's a new person in charge of student affairs and he's imposed a lot of strict rules when it comes to parties. Don't get me wrong though, there are still plenty of them. It's just a lot harder to get in now because there are limits to the total number of people and alcohol allowed. But there are petitions going around and protests planned so if you do come here, the policy should be different by then.

Either way, if you wanna go get smashed and party on the weekends you can. Or if you wanna stay on campus and watch a movie instead that's an option too, with just about everything in between being an option as well.

I'm liberal too and there are definitely a lot of conservatives living around me. But there seem to be a lot of us in other places, I think I just got kinda screwed in that area. I wear my "Bill is My Homeboy" shirt (the College Democrats give them to you when you join. Clinton graduated from here if you didn't know) with pride though. So basically if you wanna find people who share your beliefs, there are plenty of them. You won't feel like the minority.

Hope this helps. Feel free to ask any other questions about life at Georgetown if there's anything else you're curious about. Hoya Saxa!

1) It's small. Think of it like this: it's there for those who need it.

2) I haven't been on campus lately (going abroad soon), but it usually is work hard/play hard. From what I've heard, the school's going through some rough patches with the Administration but I expect it'll be settled soon. Todd Olson, VP for Student Affairs (who's been there for quite a while) worked this policy with the student government last year, but there has been some confusion as to how the policy was to be implemented. It should relax by the time you get in.

3) The school is about (self-defined) 1/3 liberal, 1/3 conservative, and 1/3 moderate... or apathetic towards national politics. It's a good balance. College Dems is one of the largest organizations on campus, and they maintain a rather friendly relationship with the College Republicans.

Thank you so much! It's really relieving to her all those things.

Yeah, don't worry about Georgetown being a Catholic school. I'm Jewish and all the Jewish groups have been trying to get me to go to their events like crazy.

And.. the alcohol requirements have just been relaxed. Hope this is a return to normalcy for the social life on campus.

Ah, wonderful. It didn't seem like it would last long.
