My nephew wants to play baseball...

So I am hearing that you have to make a tape, send a message to the coach. Anything else? How are the emails written, include stats etc. This is all new to us because we never had a atheletic member of our family!!!
Any help is appreciated, thanks!!

Most college websites have forms you can fill out to email to coaches.

here is a good example of a letter (or email) you could write to the coach of a team at a college you're looking at:

http://www.delbarton.com/OnCampus/Academics/College_counseling/coach_letter.pdf

mspill, your nephew needs some direction from his current coaches as to the level he should shoot for. Division 1,2,3-- do you know? Where have players similar to him from past years wound up playing?

Is your nephew's goal a financial scholarship or a boost in admission into a more selective school?

Depending on one's goals the strategy will be different. But basically he will be identifying the schools that are appropriate athletically and academically that also "fit", then contacting those coaches by email with pertinent stats, SAT scores, etc to see who bites.

Sometimes summer showcase camps can be helpful-- to be seen by many coaches. May wish to investigate where these camps will be held this summer...

I'd also suggest you check out www.ncaa.org to check out the rules about recruiting. For example, there are limits to how early and often schools can contact your nephew ... that said the schools and coaches can always respond to a contact from a student!

He needs to register with the NCAA clearinghouse. I believe that you can do that at www.ncaa.org, the site that 3togo mentioned.

My nephew ended up having a tape made for him when he attended a camp (it wasn't a showcase camp, it was a skills camp). However, in his case it wasn't necessary--he's going to play at a small school last year, and he threw for the coach on a campus visit. The tape helped him, but the coach would have had him without it. Maybe that would be different at a higher level of skill or a higher-division school.

Thank you all for your help, I will start the research and keep you posted.
