My own UCSC college choosing issues.

So here's the deal:

I don't know which college I should pick. There's nothing worse than being around people I don't fit in with.

I am: -half black female but race is not a big deal to me, I like being around all sorts of people, I would prefer not to be relegated to the "people of color" section(Oakes)
-Not super outgoing, but I'm funny and I like to have a good time.
-Not your average pretty, fashion conscious party girl. I don't wear skirts, the color pink, or much makeup at all.

What I'm looking for:

-A place where race isn't a big deal, somewhere diverse where people mix freely.
-Somewhere un-preppy, down to earth people are the most important thing.
-Nice guys. I'm not obsessed with "finding the hottest boys!". Science geeks/normal dudes > Abercrombie models in my opinion

What I don't care about:
-Prime location
-The best/newest dorms
-The drug scene. Weed doesn't bother me, nor do I constantly crave it.

I know this is pretty specific and sorry if it's too much so, basically I'm just looking for somewhere where I don't have to be the coolest, prettiest person around to find friends and feel comfortable.

I don’t think it is too specific, in fact, I think you should be a little more specific…

Right now, it kind of sounds like Merrill or Crown (due to the nerdy guys)

From what I’ve heard about UCSC, pretty much everyone who had trouble fitting in while in high school seems to find their own perfect niche in Santa Cruz…

SavetheManatees: Agree w/ Scad. You sound like my D and if she Chooses UCSC she will likely end up at Crown or maybe Cowell.

I don’t relaly know :\ i know that kresge is 100% apartments whcih is why thats my first choice

Hmmm. You can’t deduce anything about where you would fit in best from the stupid brochure. I care about making friends and not being lonely more than whether there’s a tennis court. Haha

I’ve almost completely ruled out UCSD because I felt like I’d be lonely there.

Haha, exactly. The best thing to do is to read the old threads.

There used to be a GREAT video on YouTube about the stereotypes, but it was banned for some reason. I thought it was because there was “nudity” (representing a Porter girl) but the other “UCSC stereotypes” video was banned too.

Yup yup, the other old threads were quite insightful.
And I think the only stereotypes that have any truth are Oakes, Crown, and Porter.

I have one kid at UCSD, one at UCSC. UCSC is turning out to be a WAY better undergraduate experience. Hope it works out well for you…I’ve had lots of professors recommending UCSC for the better Undergrad experience.

It sounds like Merrill, Crown, College 8, or Cowell might be what you’re looking for. I live in cowell, so if you have ?s, let me know.

I’ve settled on Merrill and that’s where I’ll be. But thanks for your advice.

Enjoy that hill. wink

The hill is not that bad unless you are one of the lazy students that take the bus everywhere no matter how close your class is.

I drove up the hill once and estimated that walking it wouldn’t be that bad. I need the exercise anyway. It’ll be pretty freakin’ sweet if I bring a longboard.

just so you know skateboard’s are not suppose to be used on campus. Out of courtesy to people living in the Crown though, please don’t skateboard down the merrill hill ridiculously early or ridiculously late. Seriously. I lived on the 3rd floor and I could always hear the skateboarders.

Duly noted.
