My parents aren't paying for it, but my EFC definitely says they are!

A full year of tuition and fees at 4-year SUNYs runs about $8k. If there’s one within commuting distance, you could pay that with the federal student loan and work earnings. A transfer student who’s getting no help from mom and dad (except free housing and food, which is a ~$10k/year gift) really can’t afford an out-of-state university, esp. one as expensive as UConn. The SUNYs are good schools and bachelor’s degree from one of them with a debt load of less than $20k is a deal. If you need grad school, the less debt you have for undergrad, the better.

The student needs to apply to a local SUNY that hopefully gives some merit to PTK members. Then commute from home.

Get the degree in either psych with a bio minor…or bio with a psych minor.

Actually Binghamton is 15000 per year in state.

Also New York has these STEM scholarships now. I will be applying if I end up at a SUNY. They cover full tuition but not costs. Not sure if they are only for Freshman

The HESC STEM scholarships are for graduating seniors, first time freshmen.

Binghamton is ~22k per year if you are living on campus. It is ~9k if you are commuting from home. If you are paying for this your self. the $7500 sub/unsub loans and a part time job should cover your tuition and fees. If you were to receive any scholarship aid from bing, it would reduce your cost.

The full cost of Binghamton for state residents (2015-2016) is ~$9k for tuition + ~$14k for room and board. If OP lives close enough to commute then costs for a transfer student could be covered by the federal student loan ($7500) plus work earnings. If OP wants to dorm at a SUNY campus, the costs are going to run about $23k. Other SUNYs are similarly priced, so no matter where OP lives in NYS, if there’s a 4-year SUNY within commuting distance, he can probably afford it.

Thanks for all the replies everyone!

My situation was extremely weird, and all of the in-state public schools gave me the same answer due to my situation. All except a couple were not able to accept me as a transfer student because I don’t actually graduate high school until June 2015. However, I will be graduating with my A.S in August 2015, and therefore am put into the transfer category at most schools.

I ended up applying to several out of state schools that were private. They were able to make a ton of exceptions, and got into all of them with tons and tons of scholarships! I simply explained my situation, and they accommodated me.

In the end, I am not going to UCONN. Even though it was my number one school, I guess I didn’t shop around enough. My eyes were set on this and only this school, for some reason.

I am actually going to be attending the University of New England as a double major in Neuroscience and Marine Biology. Even though it is really far from my home, the tuition is now reasonable with the scholarships, and so is dorming.

So I guess the moral of the story is if you are in the same situation, go ahead and apply to places that you never thought of, that seem interesting. I did it, and now I am going on an adventure to Maine! (plus it has a private beach!!!)
