I want to go to college immediately after high school, but my parents have told me they will not pay the EFC, whatever it is. Community college is not an option, I will not do it. How am I supposed to cover the EFC? I can't just tell the college I'll apply for a part time job once I'm there, because that's not a guarantee. And I'm told I can't take out loans without an income. I have yet to research federal student loans, so it'd be really helpful if an experienced person can explain how they work, and if I an use them to cover the EFC.

I understand there is a high stigma pertaining to community colleges, but that is your best bet. A lot of the instructors not only teach at community colleges, but also teach at state schools/private colleges.

Your best bet is to contact that school right away and figure out your options with them. Depending how much your EFC is, your financial aid might be enough for you not to take out loans.

Good luck.

I looked at the stats you posted in the other thread. I think you should prep hard for your SAT retake, then look for merit scholarships (competitive & automatic).

Merit scholarships won’t pay the EFC though, I thought they only lowered your need based aid?

Merit scholies will cover your EFC. Need-based grants will not cover your EFC. Merit aid is just that, based on merit. Look at the stickied lists at the top of this forum for merit based scholies at certain schools.

Thank you very much Kat.

What’s your ACT/SAT score and GPA?

You mentioned RPI, GT, and Purdue are you in-state for any of these?

Purdue scholarships: <a href=“Scholarships - Undergraduate Admissions - Purdue University”>http://www.admissions.purdue.edu/costsandfinaid/scholarships.php
RPI scholarships: <a href=“Scholarships and Grants | Admissions”>http://admissions.rpi.edu/aid/scholarships.html
GT scholarships:<a href=“Blow the Whistle! (404 error: page not found) | Financial Aid”>Blow the Whistle! (404 error: page not found) | Financial Aid;

No, I am out of state.

No longer interested in RPI, way too expensive. Right now I’m going for UC Irvine or Purdue.

I posted the link to Purdue scholarships above.

UC Irvine: <a href=“Scholarships | Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships | UCI”>Scholarships | Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships | UCI;

You should also sign up for a scholarships. com account to find scholarships that match you,

Not really. Most schools will reduce your financial need:
COA - EFC - Scholarships = Need

I don’t mind taking out student loans for my EFC if I can’t get enough merit. My EFC is only going to be in the 19k-22k range I’m fairly positive. I just want to be able to get into one of my top choice schools and attend. Once there I will figure out internships and part time jobs, maybe FWS.

SAT 1880, however I will re take and attempt 2000+. ACT I will take for the first time, but I’m expecting to do better on that than the SAT. During Junior year I’ve kept a 4.0, however by senior year my final gpa will be 3.94. My UC GPA is 4.17.

Did you use purdue’s net price calculator?: http://www.purdue.edu/dfa/estimator/

According to US news out-of-state tuition for purdue is: $28,794
If you were to receive the Trustee’s scholarship then you would only have $16,794-$12,794 to pay depending on your EFC

If you were to receive the Presidential schokarship then it would range from $23,794- $18,794

Irvine’s need-based scholarships range from $500-$3,000.
The merit-based scholarships don’t have a determined amount yet, and it seems like you wouldn’t find out if you received it until the spring.

I will use it as soon as I can get my family’s tax info. I will definitely apply for both those scholarships, thanks for the information.

You’re on you own to pay for EFC. I don’t think anyone will pay for your EFC - not governments or schools

So is it possible for me to take out a student loan to pay for it? I don’t have a bank account or a credit score, which I believe you need to take a loan.

Federal student loans are part of your financial aid. I don’t think you could get private student loans.
