Haha Bubbles you think you know EVERYTHING about MIT admissions?
You make me laugh.

MIT admissions are a gamble both ways. They get a lot more highly qualified applicants than they can admit. A person who gets admission there is not necessarily has better qualifications than the one who didn’t. It only means that admission people thought that the person was a better fit for the class they were going to put together. That’s all. (OTOH, graduate admissions @ MIT are not a gamble).

You can definitely increase your chances if you can get into top notch summer programs like SSP at the end of jr or soph yr in HS.

P.S: bubbles are full of gas, unstable and they eventually pop.

lol all right, princeton dreams. and aniruddh, no? i didnt say that.

btw i just wanted to let you know, i do personally know someone who use to work in admissions at princeton.

Here is an example of a person who got into Harvard, MIT, CalTech, UChicago, Rice, … this past year. Look at this person’s ECs:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/harvard-university/894548-official-harvard-university-rd-decisions-class-2014-a-5.html#post1064503559

Except for SSP, this person’s ECs had nothing to do with math/sci/eng.

I believe strength of your coursework reflects a strong interest in math/sci then you don’t have to indulge in umpteen math/sci activities outside of classes to get into MIT.

BTW, this person ended up going to Harvard.

'lol all right, if you say so, ms. i know everything about mit admissions."

Bubbles, anything you’d like to say? :|

Oh and you don’t know that lady personally per se, she’s just your GC.

Oh my friend was telling me how this guy did a lot of extra-curricular activities in the 11th and 12th, he got a 90-ish percent in the 10th, 85 in the 12th, took a gap year, he had an NGO of his own and actually got into UoC, Yale and some other amazing colleges.

@TippuSultan: You’re missing one very important part there: the applicant was female. Contrary to what MIT claims, being a female, and especially a non-Asian female, is almost a hook there.

@jbubbles123: One of my siblings, a senior at Harvard, volunteered at the admissions office this past admissions cycle. If H is anything like MIT, they have a very specific formula regarding who to admit.
They will practically throw away your file if you couple average stats (2200, 3.8) with a profile very different from the one they’re seeking.

Oh what a world- where 2200 is the average score.

PrincetonDreams, do you mean to say that MIT couldn’t find enough white female candidates with lots of math/sci ECs?

I agree that there is blatant gender bias @ MIT, CalTech and Harvey Mudd. They want to make the ratio look better. Otherwise, what will those nerdy boys do?

^Hahaha exactly!

Girls are almost always preferred.

Well other than USC and stuff where there’s a higher percentage of girls!

Tech schools/engineering focused schools LOVE girls.

i was referring to him, genius.

and oh really, what else did your sibling say? because i know adcoms from various schools (princeton adcom is my gc, bu adcom is my gc, columbia adcom is my friend’s aunt, etc)

what else does your sibling recommend for getting into harvard? go on, tell us.

its funny, cause i know MANY people with stats like those that just have passion for what they want to pursue and they get into harvard all the time.

(ha yes, i have a lot of older friends)

lol, there’s no “formula” to getting in. every student is unique in one way or another and looked at in context.

my friend got into harvard, brown, mit, stanford this past admissions cycle.
he had a’s and a-‘s in hs (not a competitive school tho), took about 4 aps with 3 “5’s” and one 4.
BUT…
he started he club he was truly passionate about (related to a career he wants to pursue in the future), did sports (but not recruited athlete material at all), and had 710-770s on subtests, had 2200ish on sat and 32 on act, and he worked 20-25 hrs weekly to help his family, and wrote this absolutely beautiful, tear jerkinn’ essay.

i think he deserved that acceptance

oh, and he was asian.

id like to hear your perspective on that.

ohh, and theres this other girl i, well know about. (shes my friends friend)
she got into harvard with a b average from nyc prep school and a 2250, but she was indian and very involved with her culture and yup, she got into harvard.

i know a lot of these “special” and “unlikely” admits haha

As long as you’re not applying for aid, you do have sound chances.

Hey ivycollege, are you a member of Umed club?

PS. Your chances look good, not great. Work A LOT on presenting it properly and disguising the drawbacks on your app.

Alright, CMU - youre through.
berkeley - yes. very easy. they are in huge debt. just get 2000+ on SAT1.
MIT- no.
gtech - depends. most prolly yes, if you can convert those practice tests to real ones.
caltech - 15% chance. depends on how you present yourself.

Berkeley, very easy? Caltech - 15%? “CMU - youre through” ?

Thats so arbitrary.
