N.U. In Decision Thread

While I wait to be approved to join the N.U. in group on Facebook, I thought I would make a thread here. I've read most of the other N.U. in threads and while I heard a lot about how it is a "marketing ploy" and no one is going to take the offer, I was hoping there were some other students out there like me who are actually considering the program. Because not only do the other threads make me feel like an unwanted cast off compared to the people admitted to fall admit, they also don't answer a lot of questions.

I thought this could be a place to ask questions that could hopefully get answered by some people that are knowledgeable about the program and just get a sense of the other students that might be going abroad. Plus, I know I could call the admissions office and ask to talk to an N.U. in alum (and I have) but somehow I always feel like they have some prescribed lines they're supposed to say. Maybe here we could get some authentic responses. Anyway, ask questions, introduce yourselves, tell everyone where you're thinking of going, etc.

I guess I'll start...

Is it hard to join clubs and other organizations once you move onto the Boston campus in the spring?

Right now I'm debating between NEU and another school but if I do choose NEU my preferred sites are London, England or Melbourne, Australia.

Northeastern received 43,000 applicants in the last year. Thats the largest number of any private university in the U.S… There is a reason for that. In any case, you are definitely not alone in considering whether or not to attend Northeastern. If it seems like there are more people on this board who are of negative opinions about Northeastern’s programs than positive, its almost certainly because people who are suspicious are more likely to ask questions than people who aren’t.

As for your question, its really not hard at all to find clubs to join. Just make sure to attend the activities fair (I believe one is hosted during orientation, in addition to one of the first weeks of classes), and get on a few mailing lists, there are plenty of clubs, and I haven’t really heard of any clubs which have prerequisites to join (I would guess that some of the performance clubs may have tryouts, but thats not really my area). As far as I can tell, most clubs are open to pretty much anyone.

As of Thursday, England had 72 students. I don’t know about the others. I think it depends on who you are whether you look at this as a bonus or not. Some think it is terrific like it is almost a vacation with credits while others seem to think it is “they weren’t good enough.” Looking at the stats of the wailtlist, it is pretty hard to come up with they weren’t good enough. 43,000 apps. 2800 spots. NE is different than probably the other schools you are looking at because the coop program dictates the environment. If this is the school you see yourself in, then take the spot and go enjoy your time abroad.

Student organizations are ALWAYS looking for members (one of my groups is still looking for members even though we only have 2 meetings left…). And people are always coming back to campus in the spring from fall co-op, study abroad, etc. The crazy NU schedule makes coming to campus in the spring very normal.
