Today Tufts parents received an email confirming that the end of first semester decades old tradition "Naked Quad Run" (Google it for highlights/lowlights) has been forever banned. The email asks us for help in persuading our Jumbo progeny not to test the fence and run naked anyway in early December as anyone doing so will be caught and suspended for spring semester 2012. This is one of the few times that Tufts has asked parents to intercede on their behalf. The School's past President played Bob Dylan music at convocation 9/09 and told parents "hands off....don't impose on your children any longer...if they want to play video games and eat Doritos every night, let them do so...let them make their own mistakes...that's how they learn". The quote didn't sound right then and it doesn't sound right now.

I commend Tufts for reaching out to parents on this matter and suggest that they do so more often on these and other issues that impact campus (both positive and negative). We may not be living on the hill in Medford, but our money and more importantly our children are, and the doctrine of "in loco parentis" flies directly in the face of the concept that it takes a village to raise a child.

Why not have an end of semester Bon Fire to celebrate Winter's arrival to replace NQR!
