Name and Reputation VS Major and Program

The title might be a little misleading, partly because I can't find the right words. :P

What I am asking here is -

Is it better to go to a University that has a good name and Reputation? Or is it better to go to a University which has a good major program but not a great name?

With regards to :

1) Jobs
2) Further Study (Grad/Doctorate)
3) In General

Discuss!

If the college has a great reputation, then you can assume that all of their programs are at least somewhat good.
But a college without an astounding reputation, even with some great programs, may be assumed to be sub-par.
Just my opinion.

If the great program is directly job related it will usually have better placement than the school as a whole and can be better than higher ranked schools overall.

State the name of the two schools

It depends.

Some jobs are very conscious of the overall prestige of the school (e.g. investment banking, management consulting, and law (with respect to one’s law school)). Others are less concerned overall, and (to the extent they are concerned) are more interested in the reputation of the major (e.g. engineering).

For PhD programs, it is likely that the in-major reputation matters the most (along with your in-major course grades and research, of course). Medical and law school are generally thought to be mostly concerned about standardized test scores and GPA for the first cut.

As in, for example, suppose I want to do grad school in Physics.

UCSB is Rank 10 on US News.
Duke Uni is Rank 29 on US News.

(Both Rankings for Physics)

Which would be the better option?
