Can anyone tell me how important (if at all) is the arts accreditation of colleges? I've searched the site but can't find any link to this. Thank you.

I suspect not very. I wouldn't use the list of NAST members as a filter for schools to which to apply. In doing a quick random search of the electronic membership list, neither BOCO, UMich, CMU, UArts or NYU came up on the list of 'accredited" institutions. I doubt that the lack of "accreditation" from NAST means anything about the quality of schools. Maybe someone from within the educational community can shed some light on the actual role and significance of NAST and other similar institutions

There's an insightful thread http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/496689-nasm-accreditation.html?highlight=nasm in the music major forum that may help shed some light on this. If you look at the list of "top" schools, the absence of a few very well known names might raise eyebrows.

The reality is that the absence of accreditation is a conscious decision of the school's administration and philosophy. It is not a warning sign if you do your homework.

These accreditations are not very meaningful. It might interest you to know that the same folks are behind these groups. I do not diminish what they are attempting - but it is a mistake to choose schools - especially in MT based on that criteria. I say "especially MT" because nasm recently approach some friends of mine in Philadelphia and NYC for guidance on updating their decades old parameters for MT. So accreditation is fine, but not at all necessary.
