Nasty racial tinged incident at IU

So what? Fights at IU happen all the time. This one just happened to be inter-racial.

It is a bad incident but from that short story I don’t see anything motivating those guys beyond the fact that those kids were just there.

An arrest has been made. I was very disappointed to see that the person they arrested was an IU student.

IllinoisMom2006, I agree ,I was hoping the person accused would not be an IU student. While it is still early and I am sure there will be an investigation , it is disappointing. I do not agree with Loon Lake, this was not just another fight . I hope most students do not agree with Loon Lake’s "so what " attitude.

Yeah, sorry, disregard my last post. This is worse than I thought it was. I was thinking of it as more of an attack on a group of people rather than an asian-hate crime.

And it’s really unfortunate that the suspect is an IU student, however it means there aren’t random *****s who have nothing to do with IU walking around campus doing * like this.

Hopefully something good can come of this. There’s just no place for this kind of behavior or the hate-talk that breeds it by making people think that it might be OK.

I actually live at Forest. The guy arrested was my friend’s roommate, actually. Him and his friends stole money, ATM cards, laptop chargers, etc. from my friend while he slept or was away. The guy was really close to being arrested for stealing my friend’s stuff, but this attack was finally got him arrested. My friend said that the police told him that this guy had a long history of theft and battery. In the end, it wasn’t racial motivation–this guy just liked to beat up people and steal their stuff (as he had done in the past). The fact that he used racial slurs is why he is being blamed for being racist. I’m sure if there had been a bunch of white guys, he would have attacked them too. If he had used racial slurs toward the white guys, no one would have ever called it racist.

This is pretty much causing some tensions in Forest because Forest put up a bulletin board in the center building about this incident that practically promotes racism.

I don’t understand why IUB admission office accepted a student with such background and history to begin with. Accepting student with such quality only endangers the safety of other students.

nkyun18, you would be surprised at the number of students accepted that have prior arrests on their records. While IUB has access to that information, unless it is a very serious crime they are willing to forgive many past incidences. However, once a crime has been committed while enrolled IU often comes down hard and will not tolerate and repeats offenses. I personally think that IU’s stance when it comes to this matter is a good one: give someone a chance to redeem themselves, if they can not, then let them go.

A non-student is also a suspect.

With regard to admitting students with prior arrests, it’s a matter of degrees. A case of shoplifting…sure, give them a second chance. If Eudaemon’s post is accurate that the first student arrested had a long history of theft and BATTERY, second chances were used up long ago. I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect any other student to have to room with him. And, if you are going to give such a student a second chance, the university had better be monitoring him closely. That does not appear to be the case in this instance. Actions have consequences, and this young man needs to be expelled.
