Like the title says, how competitive is the NHD contest? Are there more than one each year? Also, does anyone know national contest/events that are related to subjects such as history, or social science?

They're not too competitive. As for specific subjects, each year has a specific theme. This year's theme is Taking a Stand in History: People, Ideas, Events.
My major complaint is that you win $1000 if you get 1st place at nationals, and that's disappointing number for all the work you have to do.

lol agreed

did anyone here ever won the nationals?

there's someone every year, so I would assume yes

Bumppiddy bump

national history day is a joke. i got first in my school byt didnt advance past because i accidently told the lady (in the interview}) that history is an ok, not excellent subject. I guess that will screw you up

Most of the school levels are pretty easy, most of the county levels are pretty easy, and then, in most states, it's tough. Some states are harder than others, CA being one of the hardest, i do believe. To do a real good job, about 50 hours of your time must be used. It's possible to create something competitive in about 10 to 20 hours, in some places.

I did NHD about 3 years ago. My project was a total joke, it was a last-minute powerpoint that I entered in the documentary category. It won my school competition only cuz all the other projects I competed with were also last-minute and unbelievably worst than mine. Unbelievably, it also won 2nd place in regional competion. And then in states, it won 4th, beating at least 4 others. I never made any changes to it between levels; there were several spelling and grammatical errors that I knew about, but never bothered fixing. I was stunned the whole way through.
