Which should I do this year? I am becoming a sophomore this year. I have topic ideas for the Concord but still having trouble for NHD. I also plan to spend the rest of august practicing with some small essays. I think I need practice with analyzing facts, etc.

So which should I do? I am interested in doing a research paper.

The best thing you could do is write a paper that could be used for both. I know of people who've gotten their NHD papers published in the concord review. It's just a matter of selecting a topic that'll fit the NHD theme.

there used to be a fee for submitting essays to TCR, something like $40 or $50 bucks a piece. but if you do submit one, i believe you are automatically subscribed to receive their issues. The Emerson Prize winners receive additional cash (thousands, i believe), and their paper gets sent to colleges of their choice. Winners have gone on to the most competitive colleges in large numbers.

only 5 students each year win the Emerson Prize ($3,000), but 44 were published in the 2004-2005 issue. My impression is that it's very selective.

According to TCR:
"We publish about 8% of the essays we receive. If the Editor is too dense to publish your paper in the next issue, you will not hear anything, but your paper is still eligible for future issues. If your paper is to be published, you will receive a letter the month before the issue comes out."

to be honest, some of the sample essays didnt strike me as impressive....they were more like story-telling.....but some are really well written and are just amazingly good.....

I have been thinking about doing the very same thing as A-san. I also would like to found a chapter of The National History Club at my school. Has any one here already done National History day? What did you think about it? Was it really competitive??
