National Honor Society

In sophmore year I had a 84-95 average, and I want to join NHS next year as Junior. (my school only accepts juniors or seniors for NHS)

How am I supposed to apply?

Do I just go to the sponser on the first day?

Every school has different requirements and criteria.

At my D's hs, students could only join by invitation. The invitees were selected based on their GPA meeting the requirements. Check with your GC to get your cummulative average, because that's quite a spread between 84-95.

Some schools will include criteria relating to service and leadership experience. Contact the sponsor to find out the requirements (or ask someone who is already in NHS at your school).

Our high school does not have a chapter of National Honor Society.

In my school, you apply in 10th grade by getting the application from the sponsor.

[quote]
Scholarship: Students who have a cumulative grade point average of 85 percent, B, 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or equivalent standard of excellence, or a higher cumulative average set by the local school's Faculty Council, meet the scholarship requirement for membership. These students are then eligible for consideration on the basis of service, leadership, and character (and citizenship for NJHS).

Service: This quality is defined through the voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community, done without compensation and with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit.

Leadership: Student leaders are those who are resourceful, good problem solvers, promoters of school activities, idea-contributors, dependable, and persons who exemplify positive attitudes about life. Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others.

Character: The student of good character upholds principles of morality and ethics, is cooperative, demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability, shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others, and generally maintains a good and clean lifestyle.

You will receive an invitation based on whether or not you meet GPA requirements. Then you will need a recommendation letter and fill out an application which contains an essay I believe.

At my HS, you have to have a 94 point average [but apparently this varies quite a bit depending on the school, as phead128 said], then toward the end of soph. year, people whose gpa's qualify receive invitations to NHS. Then, you can fill out an application which includes listing leadership positions, extracurricular activites, volunteer hours, etc. to see if you qualify for NHS. Here, we were notified of our acceptance quite a long time after applying.

Hey inveniamviam, nice username :)

And, to actually contribute something: at my school, anyone who has a 3.5+ is invited to apply in spring of their junior year. There's a second application period in fall of senior year.
