National Honor Society?

How important is National Honor Society? My school does not do it, but it seems that everyone on cc is a member! Will I be at a disadvantage in the college admissions process not being a member? Thanks very much.

If your school doesn’t have it, not participating won’t hurt you.

awesome, thanks

Also, if you want to take initiative, you could always start a chapter at your school. In the end, just being a member of NHS really isn’t going to help anyone’s app out during top-level admissions.

NHS is extremely common and will not set you apart in the eyes of an adcom at the most selective schools. Unless you’ve taken your involvement one step further (as chapter president, you organize a weeklong tutoring event at local elementary schools, etc), being a member of NHS in itself is not even worth a place in your application (unless you’ve achieved something out of the norm - but really, that goes for any EC when applying to the most selective schools).

If your school doesn’t have it, I wouldn’t worry about it. What other ECs are you involved in? If your GPA is high, then your academic prowess will speak for itself. You could do what scrivener suggested and start a chapter. However, seeing as how it’s going to be your Senior year, by the time it gets running, it’ll just look transparent and unnecessary to the eyes of the AdCom (as well as time consuming for you). Do you have any other academic clubs in your school similar to NHS?

The closest thing is Service Club (there are no academic honor society or anything like that). I am a president in the Service Club and four-time member. My academics are the best possible for my school (though not great because my school offers very few APs) and SAT is good (2300) so hopefully that will help offset! Also Eagle Scout, though I don’t know how much that counts for! Thanks for all the replies!

Haha yeah, you seem to be in good shape (especially with that SAT score). You’re golden! Now, just focus on the essays! :)

GOOD LUCK!

They really need a sticky for this…

^ Yes, this has been asked quite a few times.
