National Merit for Canadian Schools???

Hi! I recently was accepted into McGill. If I am a NMF, I will get an 8k scholarship thru my father’s company via NM. Would NM allow me to use this at McGill?

Thanks

Bump, really need to start figuring out finances!!

You will need to read through the instructions you received when you made SF. You can also find them on your portal. The instructions from last year indicate that NM scholarships can only be used at US colleges (see below). Call NMSC to get clarification if need be.

“COLLEGE CHOICE
College choice is not considered in determining whether a Semifi nalist qualifi es as a Finalist or in the selection
of National Merit $2500 Scholarships. However, NMSC requests your college choice because every
National Merit Scholarship can be used only for attendance at a college or university in the United States
that holds accredited status with a regional accrediting commission on higher education. All National Merit
$2500 Scholarships and almost all corporate-sponsored awards (explained in the Information about the
National Merit Scholarship Competition document) are transferable from one regionally accredited U.S. institution
to another, but college-sponsored awards are not (as explained in the next section).”

is the scholarship that you father’s company offers awarded by the company directly to the student of awarded to the National Merit organization to pass on to the student?

@TomSrOfBoston I believe that if you are a NMF the company sponsors the scholarship, which is given to the NMF by the NM organization

If your father’s company provides a scholarship, then your father’s company gets to determine where you are permitted to use the scholarship.

Not quite, @DadTwoGirls. From page 6 of the 2016 NMSC Annual Report:

“The awards must be used by Scholars for undergraduate study at regionally accredited colleges and universities in the United States.” https://www.nationalmerit.org/s/1758/images/gid2/editor_documents/annual_report.pdf?gid=2&pgid=61&sessionid=4269b06e-fcc9-4340-9c96-7120971a002f&cc=1

This includes the $2500 from NMSC itself, the corporate or the college sponsored award.

If OP’s sponsor decides to do something on their own for her and even designate the threshold of NMF - that’s great. But if they are corporate sponsors in the NM program then there are restrictions on where OP can attend college.
