The Arizona State award is no longer spelled out clearly on their website. I wonder if it has been modified also.
@GTAUstin Thank you for the information on those 3 Texas schools. Son is plays several instruments, has been in band and jazz band for years as well as several groups/ensembles outside of school. Although he will not major in music, he would definitely appreciate a school that has a good music program, as well as the surrounding area having a good music scene. He definitely would participate in band, etc. as a non-major wherever he goes.
@BobWallace Darn…that does not sound good. ASU is on my son’s list, so we may need to call and clarify. If it is no longer affordable, we need to know early on to revamp the “list”…and I would guess many folks would need to reconsider their “lists” as well.
Update: I just did the ASU scholarship calculator on their website, and this is what it showed (it seems to indicate that non-resident tuition is still covered by their NMF award). Their “National Scholars” are NMF, NAF, NHF - and also required to be in Barrett Honors College.
New American University Scholarship - National Scholars Award
Tuition & Fees* $25,458
Room & Board (average)* $12,078
Books & Supplies (average)* 1,300
Total* $38,836
National Scholars Award Nonresident freshman tuition
1st Year Total* ~$14,052
Award Condition: Enrollment at Downtown Phoenix, Polytechnic, Tempe or West campus.
List has been updated to reflect the change in U of Arizona award:
I can tell my mind is definitely more forgetful during this crazy application time! I was looking through old emails and completely forgot that I had corresponded with ASU a month ago about their award for 2016. So I obviously don’t have to call them to clarify as I mentioned I would do above!
Here is the e-mail reply I received on 8/26/2015 from a freshman admissions specialist (his name is Justin):
“Thanks for your email. ASU will cover full cost of tuition and fees for National Merit finalists that have listed ASU as their number one option before May 1st of 2016. Average cost of attendance for National Merit finalists is generally $13-14k for the freshman year as a result of room and board (students can finance this remaining portion through private scholarships).”
Do you manage that yola website? If so, thanks for the list. Would it be possible to add NHRP scholarships to it? I am willing to help with the research, just need someone with permission to update it. Thanks.
My D just got a letter from ASU today and it states the benefits for NMF and NMHS is full out of state tuition for up to 4 years, $1500 for research and $1000 for Barrett travel expenses. The stated worth is $100,000. I think that is the same amount as prior years. They will also reimburse a portion of your flight costs to visit.
@BobWallace, I’m still seeing full tuition+ listed for NMSF at University of New Mexico. I was told by the Financial Aid office there that there’s no award for NMSF, and I don’t see one on the linked page. In fact, the NMF award doesn’t necessarily look automatic to me. Too bad, because my NMSF son would probably go there if he were guaranteed full tuition.
On the U of New Mexico website’s scholarship chart, NMF/NAF are listed as getting the National Scholars + Amigo Scholarship which pretty much equals full ride (it is less than $1000 short of full ride if I did the math right). It appears automatic to me.
@mstomper sorry there is no longer any scholarship for NMSF at U of New Mexico. I believe awhile back your son visited Ole Miss. Is he still interested in Ole Miss? Do they still have the NMSF scholarship that is very nice (tuition+room)?
@4kids2graduate and @mstomper D16 just got her acceptance letter from U of New Mexico today. It states that if she becomes a finalist (expected to be) that she will be getting a full scholarship (tuition, fees, room and board - renewable for up to 4 years) plus an Apple IPad. It also says that “even if you are not selected as a finalist, a student of your ability may also qualify for the Regents’ Scholarship (approximately $33,000 per year). To be considered for this scholarship, students must complete a scholarship application and admission process by Dec 1, 2015.”
@4kidstograduate, he liked Ole Miss fairly well; his only issue was that he would prefer an urban setting. The hope is that his GPA is weighted so that he gets the full tuition scholarship at Temple. His GPA is 3.35, but all his classes are AP or honors. He may still apply to UNM, and it’s possible he would have picked Temple anyway. What I was told by UNM was that the most he could qualify was the Amigo scholarship, which would make the tuition in state.
@mstomper Regardless of what you were told by UNM, what @lonetreegrad said is in his D16s acceptance letter seems to indicate your son could/might get a more generous offer than the Amigo if he does not advance to finalist. It might be worth applying just to see how it plays out (if he has enough interest in UNM). You mentioned Temple…is that his number one choice?
My son was adamant initially that he would not apply to more than a very few schools, but now he is thinking he should apply to more than he planned initially - just to see how the financial aid offers play out - and ultimately have more affordable choices in the end. Every week it appears that the plan or “strategy” changes and evolves. At this point I think it will continue in that fashion until he can’t keep up with deadlines and he will say “I’m done”.
@mstomper Have you looked at Fordham? Their full tuition award requires NMSF and top 10% class rank. Beautiful campus in an urban setting.
@BobWallace, Fordham would probably be a great fit, but he wouldn’t be that close to top 10 percent if his school ranked.
@4kidstograduate, Temple is his first choice at this point. He did say the other night he would probably still apply to UNM.
Fixed New Mexico in the list
Highly recommend Texas A&M! My NMF is a freshman there and he has nearly a full-ride with their stacking scholarships!!! Gig 'em!
For what it is worth, UNM didn’t do so great on College Scorecard.
BTW, are their scholarships automatic? Their website says “Criteria to be considered” That Amigo scholarship looks like a great deal for average stat students.
I second Texas A&M - great school and great scholarship but if interested apply now! They are rolling admission and popular majors fill early.
Hmm.
Texas A & M, #70 in USNews rankings, Median Income of 53K on college scorecard, Honor’s College
Takes U Arizona off list. Adds Texas A and M in its place.
Many of the colleges use vague or weak wording (apparently they have lawyers), but all indications from personal experiences shared here on CC indicate that the UNM awards are automatic.
