National Merit Scholarship- What is it?

Hi everyone,

I hear a lot about NMF but I don’t know what it is. If I was selected would I have been notified? I got a 1390 on the PSAT and have a Selection Index of 207 but I don’t know if that is good, bad, or what. I am in 99th percentile if that helps.

What state are you in?

I’m sorry, but it is not high enough. This yr’s commended cutoff is 209.

The cutoffs are out already for Class of 2017?

@madison85 Not state cutoffs, but commended. Has there ever been a time when state cutoffs are lower than commended? Commended is 209 and the OP has a 207.

No, state cutoff can only be equal or higher than commended.

Oh well. How much does it matter for admissions?

Not a whole lot except for places where it might be an autoadmit. Don’t worry about it. Get your SAT up if you can and there will be some good school options open to you.

I am fine with test scores, my ACT is great.

How you feel is different than what will objectively get you money. Do you know that your ACT score will objectively qualify you for automatic and/or competitive merit aid?

@CourtneyThurston Yes I do. It qualifies me for full tuition/highest scholarship for all schools that give automatic aid and gives me good merit at other schools (~15-20k).

Great. Then missing out on NMF shouldn’t be a big hurdle to overcome. Congrats!
