National Merit Semifinalist Qualify Scores -- Class of 2012

My S just found out this morning he’s in. Does anyone have a link for Illinois names?

Here’s a link to all California Semi-finalist names:

<a href=“Document: California’s National Merit semifinalists – The Mercury News”>Document: California’s National Merit semifinalists – The Mercury News;

Princeton review: first practice test is 31, currently take Princeton review ACT class.
No SAT or PSAT exam or class ever taken. Estimated current PSAT is among 205 to 210. (Did free PSAT last week, result is not coming yet)
What is the best way and how to improve PSAT to among 210 - 213 (210 is last year’s cutoff for MI)
Options:

  1. PSAT classes, (only 3 sessions, 1st is practice test, another 6 hours for 2 session classes, 10/6/2011 and 10/10/2011, ends before PSAT test date, $300)
  2. SAT classes: mostly ends until end of Nov, 2011. Will SAT class help PSAT more or PSAT class better in less than 30 days?
    How about SAT liveOnLine?
  3. Self-prepare: how about just laze to do the practical test at home  ?
(BTW, I am the mom of the student. )

Just talked to GC and DD and her best friend will be notified today! WOO HOO! I have a pretty good idea both will be going to UA in the fall.

Per NM, GA is 218

Called NMSC just now - the cutoff for Illinois is confirmed = 216

What are the numbers next to the names on the California list??

^Nothing that means anything to us.

Those numbers are codes for intended college majors.

I wish Ohio would print the names for all semi-finalists like NY- not just the Cinci area.
I really want to see D’s name on a list since the principal has only informed 1 student and not D. I worry about nagging guidance since they are responsible for sending out all the college stuff, and I don’t want to get on their bad side.

linnylu – why not call National Merit back and ask what they recommend when students have not been informed by their school that they made NMSF?

Linnylu,

I would highly recommend you raise the issue immediately to your d’s principal and/or guidance counselor and keep pushing till you get an answer. If she made higher than the cutoff and has not been notified, and you know for a fact other students at her school have been notified, then something sounds wrong to me.

Now is not the time to be timid, and if she is going to Alabama anyway, you really don’t need much from the guidance counselors other than sending a transcript. The NMF award is pretty automatic there as I understand it. Not that there is anything wrong with trying to straighten this out such that they should take offense.

Called and found out Michigan cutoff is 210

Called NMSC. MN=215

MN is no longer disputed.

PLEASE DON’T FREAK OUT! Check the explanation of the notation in the first post. When you see, for instance, AZ <= 219, that means that Arizona’s cutoff is no higher than 219. This comes from a report like, “I live in Arizona, made a 219, and got my letter.” When you see, for instance, TX > 216, that means that Texas’ cutoff is higher than 216. This comes from a report like, “I live in Texas, made a 216, and didn’t make it.”

10(?) Boarding school regions
New England Boarding Schools = 223 (post #636)
These usually are set to be equal to the highest cut-off score among the individual states in the region.

Internationals=?
This usually is set to be equal to the highest cut-off score among all the individual states.

Commended (national cutoff) = 202 (Class of 2012 Notification Letters - College Confidential)
Any person with a score equal to or higher than this cutoff who is not a NMSF receives commended status. This group represents the highest 50,000 scorers.

Just called for KY. Cutoff = 212. S missed by 2 points. He was sick the day of the test. Scored a 2320 on SAT 1st and only time he took it. Anyone know if that counts for anything as far as NMS goes – maybe some sort of secondary consideration?

Yeah, I know, I’m just begging.

We were hoping for some non need merit scholarship money from one of the top 15 computer science schools. How much does NMS count toward that kind of thing?

Regarding the deadline question for submitting info for Finalist, my S’s letter said info must be submitted electronically by OCT. 3. (We’re in Minnesota.) School is hosting an instructional meeting on Monday.

Can anyone else confirm this October 3rd deadline? If that’s the case, I will contact D’s principal tomorrow.

I’m not as well informed on this as I’d like to be, but from what I can tell in this thread, a school can choose to go electronic or paper. It’s possible that MWMom107’s school is electronic where Debbie7452’s school is paper. There is a link in post 487 to an NMSC form that gives the October 12 date. Historically, a school has had the right to specify to the student whatever deadline it thought it needed in order to get its own material in on time.

Sorry this is such a hassle for you.

mymaus–Your kid will be “Commended.” There won’t be any consideration of his SAT scores.

However, he should be able to qualify for merit scholarships at many schools based on his SAT scores (if he has the GPA/rank to go with them).
