Official National Merit Semifinalist Qualifying Score Thread for the Class of 2013

(For the PSAT administered in Oct. 2011 with NMSF notifications in Aug./Sept. 2012 for the graduating class of 2013)

Because National Merit doesn't post a list of cutoff scores by state, people on this site have traditionally shared data here on CC. NMSC usually notifies in late August and news should be coming soon. Because high schools are highly idiosyncratic about contacting their student semi-finalists, it would be great if everyone would update the score under their state to compile a list for the individuals who won't know about their status for several more weeks.

You can feel free to edit the list yourself. Or simply post your information and rely on others to edit it in.

If you have been notified that you are NMSF, post your score (and your state) if it is lower than the score already posted for your state. It will then become the lowest know qualifying score and be indicated as "<=".

If you have reliable knowledge of what the qualifying score for your state is (try asking whoever notifies you!), post it here, too. It will become the definitive cut-off score for your state indicated by "=".

Finally, if you know that you did not qualify and had a reasonably high score, it can also be useful to post your score as an example of the highest non-qualifying score. This can be indicated by ">="

Please note: Be conscientious as you post scores on this thread--it would be crushing to be led to believe you have made the cutoff by a post but actually haven't. But everyone should be tolerant of mistakes, too. This is an unofficial source of information derived from a collaborative process and is not, therefore, guaranteed.

See the stickied FAQ thread in this forum for links to lists of previous scores.

After the press-release date in mid-September, qualifying scores will be available by phone from the NMSC. Here is the number to call--the receptionist will give you one "qualifying score" when asked.

Thanks so much for this, Descartesz - anxiously awaiting any info here in Texas…right on the bubble, I think…

Does anybody know about when the information started coming out last year (I mean more specifically than "late August- early Sept)? Thanks!

From last year’s thread:http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/national-merit-scholarships/1199607-national-merit-semifinalist-qualify-scores-class-2012-a.html

The first report was on the 26th of August. :)

Jennie…

It’s really up to the high schools. Some tell the kids as soon as THEY are notified.

It also depends on who visits College Confidential. There may be kids who will be told on Monday that they made NMSF, but if they don’t post here, we won’t know it.

Thanks a lot, Junior Mint and Mom2collegekids. My son is really hoping he makes it. The qualifying score in MO has not been higher than his score in the past 5 years, but he got the exact score that was the qualifying score last year, so it is close!

WAITING in TEXAS :/

Bookmarking this. I’m just below last year’s MI cutoff, so I’m crossing my fingers!

Looking back through previous years’ threads it appears that scores are typically mailed out to high schools about August 25 and start appearing on CC shortly thereafter. As the weekend intervenes this year we might start seeing score postings early next week.

I just called the folks at the National Merit Scholarship Corp. The National Merit Semifinalist lists are being mailed to the schools today. Hopefully, we start seeing the first postings on CC by the end of this week.

I live in Evanston, so I should be one of the first… (nervous about 217 in IL)

^^^Really? How cool. Our HS is good about letting the kids know ASAP. Hope I can post this week & not have to wait until 8/31 :)

@collegebound666

I too am worried about a 217 in IL! Please IM me as soon as you find out haha. My school doesn’t start until september. Do you go to Evanston township?

Our principal told DH he would let him know as soon as he heard. Yay!!!

i have 213 in illinois. not much hope but i’ll still be checking!

Sitting with a 215 in IL…

Looking back at one analysis I put together earlier this year, I had the following guesses for what the class of 2013 cutoffs might be (with the change from last year’s cutoff):

CA 219 (-2)
TX 216 (-3)
NY 218 (-1)
FL 211 (-3)
PA 214 (-1)
OH 211 (-3)
IL 214 (-2)
MI 209 (-1)
NJ 221 (-2)
VA 219 (-1)
GA 215 (-3)

As you can see, I was very optimistic in terms of the downward trend for all the states I looked at. There’s not enough public info to do this with precision, but it will be interesting to see if I came anywhere close.

And a hush falls over the forum as we await the posting of the first score…

Clapuma ^

In NJ patiently waiting and hoping you are so right! Thanks for all of your calculations this past year.

Clapuma, I hope you’re right. Waiting in Texas and needing 216!!!
