My son is applying using the online application instead of paper. He finished his essay last night, 636 words/3412 characters w/ spaces, and it fit pretty close to what the essay field allowed (with some partial lines at the end of paragraphs).

Do you have to have an SAT score? Can’t they use ACT instead?
Just making sure…

You HAVE to have a SAT score. The ACT is not acceptable.

Sign up for the Nov or Dec test … send to 0085

If my son’s application online says “application closed” does
that mean that his counselor/school has completed their part??

Just spoke to NMSC.
- On-line deadline for Finalist apps is Oct 12. The app is actually submitted by the HS. So there may be an internal earlier deadline for a given HS’ students to submit their portion, because when the applicant presses “submit”, it actually goes the HS, which then adds stuff, and has to submit to NMSC by Oct 12.
- Yes, any SAT testing before Jan 1 is eligible. Include the NMSC CEEB at each testing, and they will pick the highest SAT score.

@parnmom - I called NMSC regarding the “application closed” info. I was told that when the parent signs the online parental consent the parent’s portion is closed, therefore the parent cannot review the application, but the student still has access.

I was logging in as the student. I’m guessing that his counselor
completed her part then. I had e-mailed her the day before.
Fingers crossed!

I’m a little concerned about the word count/character count? My son prepared a nice short essay and copied and pasted it into the website. Neither one of us saw anything about word/character count.

I didn’t see anything about a word count. The instructions only stated that the essay had to fit into the box they gave you.

I wouldn’t worry about the length since they didn’t say anything about that - just so it fits in their box and your son addressed the prompt.

My kid said it was a very easy test this year—the previous year had been more challenging. Maybe this explains the jump in scores.

I called today to check on D’s file and make sure the high school had completed their portion. The lady said that D’s file was complete. Is that all we need to do?

^You called NMSC? If so, and the file is complete, then relax, go back to your “regular” life until finalists are announced in early Feb. (Your D’s job is to keep her grades up, do college apps…and have a great senior year!)

This whole process is certainly a lesson in patience! This time last year, our kids were about to take the PSAT.

So, my D/S did not make Semifinalist, on college applications what does he list? Commended as a ‘National Merit Scholar’?

Anyone else have luck getting confirmation from NMSC on completed application submission? I called today, and “Stephanie” would not tell me if everything was submitted. She said I should talk to gc at school. She did tell me that the SAT score report was received, but that was all. If she could tell me about the SAT why not the rest of the app? Of course that was after school hours so I won’t be able to get in touch with gc until next week. :(

I think my son (or me since I’m the homeschool counselor) checked on the status of the application after everything was submitted and it said application closed, so I assumed that meant they received everything.

Ken, that sounds like the right wording.

Didn’t get it with a 219.

I hate New Jersey SO much right now -_-

*So, my D/S did not make Semifinalist, on college applications what does he list? Commended as a ‘National Merit Scholar’?
*

the term is: “Commended Student”

From the website…
*Commended Students
In late September, more than two-thirds (about 34,000) of the approximately 50,000 high scorers on the PSAT/NMSQT® receive Letters of Commendation in recognition of their outstanding academic promise. Commended Students are …

I called NM on Thurs. and they told me my seniors stuff had not been submitted, even though GC told me they had submitted info. I then called GC , and apparently administration had to also review/confirm. After that was done, I re-called NM and they confirmed everything was recieved. It seems to depend on who you get on phone.
