Our school district does not use Naviance. I have seen it mentioned many times on CC and I am wondering what the benefits of these products are and if our district would benefit from its use. If you are in a school district that uses Naviance can you tell me in what ways it is helpful and possibly if it fits in what ways it is expected to be helpful but doesn't live up to the expectation? Thank you for your help!

The short version is that Naviance lets you see the GPA and SAT of the last 5 years of applicants from your HS to individual colleges and whether they were admitted, waitlisted or rejected, which is a lot more helpful than relying on the college’s website or your GC’s recollection. It also tells you in aggregate how many from your HS each year applied/accepted/enrolled.

One limitation is that it does not include anything to tell you whether the lower scoring admits were athletes, URMs, legacies, etc, so some parents become too optimistic.

From what you are telling me for this to be of benefit a school must have a history of students applying to a variety of schools. In a district where the vast majority of students go to the state’s publics with few applying to other schools, it sounds like minimal information would be obtained and therefore Naviance would not be all that valuable. Am I understanding this correctly?

The one benefit I see from Naviance is that I can track the GC’s movement on sending the requested paperwork into the colleges and also it is a good way to see the schedule for college visits.

I do not think it would be very helpful if only a few schools with well known standards receive most applications

DSs school has it and it seems very helpful if you are applying to the same schools as the majority (ie. bordering state schools and regional privates). If however you are applying out of region and few if anyone else have applied than the minimal data is uslesss.

I thought Naviance was extremely helpful in choosing reach, just right, and “safety” schools. It really helped my child strategize and he actually only ended up applying to three schools since he was able to narrow it down so well using a combination of Naviance, visits, and word-of-mouth.

coase: Thanks for the link that gives me a really good ideal of the information provided but it doesn’t seem that this will be very helpful for us.
