ok so I'm currently 17 years old and a junior in high school. I'm trying to figure out whether I should go to the navy or apply to the naval academy??? If I do go to the navy then after completing my tour go to the naval academy, do I still have to complete the 5 years active commitment required by the naval academy or by going to the navy make me already complete that??? If I go to the navy first does that make my chances higher to get into the naval academy?? I'm just a little confuse whether I should go to navy first then naval academy. someone please help :)

You still have to do your 5 after graduating USNA.

No, if anything, it’s harder to get in as prior-enlisted, very few are accepted.

You need to be aware that if you enlist, very good chance you’ll remain a sailor and not become an officer; you need to decide if you want to be an officer or not, as they are both different lifestyles…if you are okay with not becoming an officer, then enlist if you want to, but if you want to be an officer, then go that route. Most who enlist and end up at USNA didn’t have that in mind when they first enlisted, that idea came later.

ok so my career goal is to become a CIA agent, I was thinking of enlisting because I know the navy has a good intelligence program that I feel would look good. Knowing that which one would look better to the CIA sailor (intelligence) or an officer?? or can I be an officer in the Intelligence program??

You don’t even know if you could get a job in the intelligence field until you take the entrance exam and the Navy will try to get you to sign for a job they need to fill. You could also go to a college that has NROTC and become a officer that route while living a more civilian life style. When I was in the Army enlisted soldiers who later became officers were only able to get promoted to I think Captain. Please think carefully before you enlist.

Thanks you very much newfaith. Now hearing this from you and a few others I think I will decide to try to get appointed to the naval academy. Thanks
