Hi all:
It's been a while since I have visited this forum as my academy grad is now 27 and off doing her Navy thing. The 13 year old loves the Navy. Loves all things military, battleships, war historian etc. In fact, his school spends their Fridays at a nursing home and he LOVES to go because there are a couple of gentlemen there who were at Pearl Harbor. He loves to talk to them about their experiences. Anyway, his dream is USNA and there is a Sea Cadet unit not too far from home. Wondering if any of your children (or current students) were Sea Cadets and if they enjoyed it and how if at all, it might help admission chances. Thanks in advance. It seems like it could be something right up his alley.

I think it’s viewed the same as JROTC, which could helped, but nothing significant. However, he could get a leadership position, which could enhance his application somewhat significantly.

Just curious, what’s your daughter do in the Navy?

Thanks for the reply. I didn’t think about the leadership aspect. I think that could really help him for life skills as well, if not for the Navy. His little brother (10) saw me reading about it and now wants to do it too (They have a league for the younger kids 11+).
So, it might be something we check out.

Anyway, daughter is currently in Monterey getting her masters in electrical engineering. While at the academy, she interviewed and was selected for the EDO program. (Engineering Duty Officer or option…something like that community). She did 1 tour on the USS WASP to get all her certifications and then after that tour, would be sent to Monterey for the masters. She has an additional 2 years service commitment after the masters. But it has been a great assignment and career for her so far. She lives in a cute little cottage in Carmel, a block from the ocean and is married with a 1 1/2 year old. Going to school was a great opportunity to have a family and not be away as well. So, she is very happy in the Navy and it just suits her very well. Thanks for asking. :)

Very cool!

I highly recommend Sea Cadets! DS joined when he was a freshman, and is now the LPO of his division. While in USNSCC, he attended recruit training, field ops training, master at arms training, petty officer leadership academy, and staffed three national recruit trainings (twice as LPO). He participated in color guard, attending many community functions and meeting lots of interesting people. He learned military protocol, fire fighting and damage control, land navigation, land and sea survival, participated in the commissioning of two Navy Ships, flew in a Black Hawk, and sailed on the USS Iwo Jima from VA to FL. His leadership positions weren’t just titles; they required true leadership - he is in charge of over 100 cadets, planning and carrying out weekly drills. I could go on and on. At every interview he went to this year during the course of applying to USNA, he was told that his resume was one of the most impressive they had ever seen. I am sure that his experience as a Sea Cadet was instrumental in his receiving an appointment to the USNA class of 2017!

Thanks, Navy2017 mom. I am sure today is a tough but proud day for you. Happy I-Day!

I doubt that either JROTC of Sea Cadets matters much in your USNA application. I rarely notice Sea Cadets being mentioned on either of the 2 USNA forums that exist. JROTC is sometimes considered ‘playing soldier’ while in h.s., so I would imagine experiences vary depending on the particular program you participate in. I do recall several people saying you should NOT wear your JROTC uniform while attending NASS.
