NC Computer Science Student, UNCG or UNC

I’m currently a sophomore computer science student enrolled in a community college transfer program.

I’ve applied to transfer to both UNCG and UNC – pretty sure I have a good chance at both.

However, as much as I want to go to UNC, it’s going to cost me about $15,000 more to attend UNC than UNCG.

UNCG is 15 minutes from my house, which would allow me to commute there and save money on room and board. While my parents make good money and are helping with 90% of my college costs, I don’t feel comfortable using more of their money than I have to. They’re close to retirement and I’d rather them worry about that than ~$22,000 tuition a year. (And I’m trying to graduate without loans)

For those of you at both schools – how is the computer science program? Is UNC’s program really that much stronger than UNCG’s?

I’m also afraid would I be missing out on more prestigious career opportunities if I picked UNCG, as I know recruiters from prominent companies frequent UNC. I plan on moving out of state after graduating. Can anyone in UNCG’s provide insight on job placement and internship oppurtunities for computer science students? Is UNC really worth the extra $$?

Computer science is one of those degrees where the school really makes no difference. If you can get out of school without debt, you’re much better off than going to UNC. Just make sure you have some proficiency in at least one mainstream language like SQL, Java, C#, Python, etc. Tech jobs are all over the place.
