NC Road Trip Advice - UNCW/UNCH/Duke

The most disconcerting photo at Bullock’s is the one of Bono and other members of U2 in their full 1980s mulleted glory.

When you visit Duke, the campus tour will only take you around West Campus. Be sure to jump on a bus (they’re free for everyone) and ride over to East Campus. East is where all the freshmen live and has a good bit to see. I don’t know why they don’t offer a tour there along with the standard tour.

Also, Duke Gardens is situated somewhat between the Admissions Office and West Campus. You should definitely plan to walk through if you are visiting in the spring.

There are a lot of good restaurants just off East Campus, but I would agree with other posters that Franklin Street in Chapel Hill is a better option (and only ten minutes from Duke’s campus).

@rmldad thanks for the additional tour information.

Two of the girls have found classes to it in on and the gardens seem to be where everyone is telling me I should go while they are in class :)

About the classes for any others who might read this thread:

Duke lets students sit in on ANY class that they offer. They have a listing of them by day and subject on the visitation registration page. All you need to do is show up a few minutes prior to class and let the professor know you are a prospective student and want to sit in. As long as there is not a test, they “should” let you stay. The student is expected to stay for the entire class.

UN Chapel Hill has a list of selected classes and the student then needs to register in advance for the class or classes they want to sit in on. They get a confirmation back if their request has been approved. They then need to take the confirmation with them to the class and give it to the professor. Once again, only for the student, not the parent.

UN Wilmington did not have anything on their Website about visiting classes. One of the girls in our group sent an email asking about course information, sitting in on classes, meeting with them and so. She received prompt replies from two departments with one of them offering to meet with her and give her a tour and the other nicely explained that their classes are not open for visits. The third department, she got the read reciept for the email, yet the professor never responded.

Another girl in the group wrote to FA and Admissions at UNCW asking about a meeting and got a reply right away.

Quick update: Man vs. Food was on the other day and the segment was on this very area. [A Chapel Hill Rite of Passage : Video : Travel Channel](http://www.travelchannel.com/video/a-chapel-hill-rite-of-passage-12275) Time Out: Looks like I should take the girls there!

Also, I have to hand it to Wilmington, their professors have really been very nice. One of the girls emailed one about sitting on a Grad Level class that she found and she really liked the course description. She wrote and explained that she was coming to visit and how she knew it was a grad level class and all however could she please sit in on the class and the professor wrote back saying yes and even extended an invitation to meet with her before the class.

Another girl wrote to another professor about a class and that professor was also really kind and said no problem about sitting in on his class and to please come early and introduce herself.

Sadly, the one class over at Chapel Hill that had been approved, we got an email yesterday that there will be a “guest lecturer” that day and so the class is no longer available for visitors that day. They were very nice and asked that she try and find another class so that she can have the “Carolina” experience.

About places to stay… the Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club has an amazingly great winter special of $129 per night, the only catch, is there is a three night minimum. So if you do plan on looking at a lot of schools in the area, as we are, and spending the time to attend the classes and take the tours, this is a wonderful deal that I only found on their Website.
The owner of Time Out is a really great guy! He is a Carolina grad, as is his wife. He will tell the story of how badly his kiddos wanted to also go to UNC-CH. They were great students and all in-state. But Carolina has gotten so competitive none of them were accepted with a double legacy. So be mindful of just how difficult it is to get into to Carolina.

When we visited Duke we stayed at the Washington Duke Inn in a Family Suite. The price was less than getting two rooms at other hotels. There is a king sized bed and bunk beds in the room allowing space for four. Check it out.
