Should we wait until it looks like kid will actually be recruited somewhere? Or is there some advantage to sending them now? Kid is class of 2021 and scored well enough that he won’t be taking them again. Thanks!
Others will have more knowledge than me, but I would think the first hurdle is to figure out whether the coach has any interest in the student. If not, the SAT is irrelevant.
Once the coach is interested, then s/he needs to figure out whether the potential recruit can be admitted. I would imagine at that point the SAT scores are hugely important.
If you are at the stage of just reaching out to coaches, I would guess that a killer score would be good to include with all the other accolades the player will list on their profile/resume, but again there are definitely much more knowledgeable posters, hopefully they will chime in.
I’m assuming you’re asking about registering with the NCAA clearinghouse and sending the score there? Not much advantage to sending early, but it’s not a bad time to start that process either. I know athletes that did it all at the last minute and others who did it early. Generally the latter group was less stressed.
NCAA will not review a student’s file until a D1/D2 coach submits their name on an Institutional Request List. The vast majority of kids who register with NCAA every year and pay the $90 fee are never recruited and NCAA never even looks at their paperwork. So there’s not much point in paying the fee until you know for sure that there is D1/D2 interest. (If you need an NCAA# for filling out recruiting forms, you can register for a free Profile Account and convert it to a Certification Account later if needed.) OTOH, if he is already registered with NCAA and you know for sure he won’t be taking the SAT again, you may as well send scores now. If he’s already registered but you think he may still take it again at some point, I’d wait and use one of the free score reports.
For D3, you don’t need to “send” the scores just mention it in the intro email and their online recruiting questionnaire. They absolutely will want to know that before they start considering the athlete.
It is probably too early to request an academic pre-read but it would be great to include your child’s score in a pdf attached to coach’s email. My daughter’s pdf had demographics (including contact information for coach and college counselor), action photo, athletic achievements/goals and GPA/test scores. I think our kids may go to the same school - if I’m right, you can put the grade descriptors rather than GPA. Good luck!
@GoodtoKnow I didn’t think to put the grade descriptors, that’s a good idea. Thanks!
@HMom16 Apologies, I thought based on the thread title that you were asking when to report to NCAA. Sounds like you are asking when to report to coach? If so: strong scores are good to communicate to the coach as early as you have them. It can be part of your pdf or a good chance to initiate a new email to a coach in order to keep a conversation going.
@politeperson Thanks, I was actually asking about reporting to the NCAA.
Kid recently sent copies of transcripts and noted his ACT score on emails to all coaches. Also included a link to summer highlights. Hopefully he’ll get some feedback as its now ok for coaches to contact class of 21.
Hi, my son logged into the NCAA portal today and there are two tasks - send test scores and send official transcript. Both were “assigned” 4/6/20. Is this just a standard thing or does this mean that someone has inquired? Thanks!
Do you mean the Clearing house? Did he set up an account?
If so, those are automatic reminders. He can send the test scores off an exam (I think the code is 9999). Transcripts have to be a final transcript, an original from each high school attended. Daughter’s high school had an athletic dept secretary who sent all the athletes going to D1 and D2 schools in a couple of batches in June after graduation. A lot of good that did - the NCAA regularly loses about half, the secretary said. My daughter had attended 3 high schools and 1 went through without a problem but 2 of them got ‘lost’ (and I was asked by the NCAA “Do you know how many transcripts we get?” and I answered yes, but you charge us to use your service)
@twoinanddone Yes, he has an account. Good to know they’re automatic. He has test scores but no final transcript as he’s a junior. Thanks for the info!
