I was awarded an NDSEG fellowship today. NSF results are to be released in "early April." My question is, if I win both of them, can I accept both of them? Haven't looked into the details.

Not usually. Sometimes you can defer one, but I don’t think you can in this case (definitely double check the terms)

Congrats though! NDSEG is a great fellowship

Yes, you can get both of them. Assuming what I read earlier today was correct, you can use both of them for a total of 5 years of support. NSF allows you to defer for two years, and you gradually get more money each year from NDSEG. So the optimal plan would be to use NDSEG for your first three years (while deferring NSF for the first two, and forfeiting your first year of NSF during the third), and then use the remaining two years of NSF.

"8. Can I put the first year on reserve of my GRFP fellowship?

Yes. Any 2 of the 5-year award period can be put on reserve. You can do this via NSF GRFP."

never mind what I said - the GRFP faq is more accurate :)

Hey thanks
The reason I was asking is because about 25% of NDSEG winners also get the NSF. That’s a fairly good chance for me then based purely on statistics. I could not find any decent FAQ’s for NDSEG fellows and I was wondering if maybe I should wait on accepting the NDSEG to see if I got the NSF and then accept the NSF instead. Guess I need to read up on the disbursement of funds for these things. Wasn’t really expecting to win since it’s such a crap shoot.

Why was the question answered in post #1 before it was asked in post #3?

I happened to see this thread before; the 3rd post and first post somehow got transposed

Original post got timestamped as 7:43pm when it was posted at 6:43pm.

When CC’s servers get overloaded, sometimes we have weird post timing and double-posting issues. Sorry for the wrong order – I’d fix it if I could, but unfortunately not even mods can change the timestamp on a post. (Or time travel.)
