Nearly 35,000 applications for the Class of '15.

Record applications to Harvard College | Harvard Gazette

"....an increase of nearly 15 percent over last year’s record 30,489, and of more than 50 percent since 22,955 applied four years ago."

I'm not sure I'd even get on the waiting list if I were applying now...
Sheesh.

Whoa–I don’t even think I would know how to process that number of applicants. I told my son (admitted last year) and he said-- “well. maybe they’ll use some of that profit to fund the J term.” LOL

Yet another reason I am glad I went to college in an earlier generation–when there was an easy 10% acceptance rate…

Wow, that really is crazy. I didn’t apply here, but did apply to many of its peers and I’m just awe-struck by the shear magnitude of qualified applicants. Best of luck to all!

**** my life.

I bet the admissions officers are saying the exact same thing too.

It’s because of common app.

wishes she was born earlier
=(.

Will the number of applicants go down next year?

I beg to defer. I think it will continue to increase judging from the economy. We’re living in an era where more and more students are seeking a college degree.

Well, there go any hopes that I had before.

The upside of all this? Even more people will apply next year, and the next year, and the year after that, etc. I’m just glad I’m in gr.12 this year!

Well hopefully with this trend (Dartmouth is experiencing the same thing, and probably a few others too) colleges will start accepting more people to even it out a bit?

If not, I’m screwed. Dartmouth and Harvard were two of my top three and now I have next to no chance (as if I had a chance before)… ='(

Hopefully, but I don’t think they would increase the size of the freshmen class simply because there are more applicants.

): Same here. I’m international and only applied to 4 top U.S. schools. These are my absolute favourites. I could have applied to quite a few more, but didn’t. There is no point in going to the U.S. for education unless I get into my favourite schools! Harvard is one of them.

Indeed, it is upsetting news (at least for the students anyway). But, I wouldn’t necessarily stop trying. We just have to remember now that this is the era to stress our individuality in the app among hundreds of similar profiles.

They need to get away from the common app FFS.

I am fairly certain that many of those extra 12 000 applicants over the last 4 years are just crazy hopefuls - people willing to burn 70$ on another commonapp submit.

I reckon that over the last few years the accepted line has not moved too much.

I would like to work for admissions while I’m in university, even though most people don’t think it’d be fun. I would love to read essays and such!

^ That’s a whole issue on it’s own.

Agreed, just pointing out that it isn’t 50% hard to get in now than 4 years ago. Despite a 50% increase in apps…

Yep. I’m reminded of the Stanford? adcom who said during the early round that despite the increase in apps he just ends up rejecting the same kid over and over again.

You do make a good point, Idiosyncra3y.
