need a computer for college?

ill be going into the business school at university of maryland college park, will i need a computer? i know the school recommends them, but how many students actually bring a computer to campus?

and, should i bring a laptop or desktop?

students without a computer will be very rare.

Either one will work fine, there is no need to get into an argument like every other thread. Desktops are cheap and GREAT preformers while laptops are more expensive but you can take them around...so make the choice based on whats available to you/how much you want to spend.

Personally, I am bringing a nice desktop as well as a used laptop but you probobly dont need two computers (as a business major)

you probably want a computer... whether you want a laptop or desktop depends on how far you're moving, how much you're willing to spend and how you expect you're lifestyle to be... desktops are cheap, but heavy...and you're stuck in the dorm... laptops are more expensive...but you can easily carry it anywhere...

It's a tough call. I'm buying a $3,000 laptop from cyberpowersystem.com for PSU Main in a few months, and I plan for it to last through college. I want the mobility and the power (it has a gig of ram and a 160 gig hd, built in webcam, etc).

On the other hand, I plan to buy a mac mini for $600 and a flat panel display my sophomore year, because PSU's communications department uses the apple os a lot, so this way I have apple access for really cheap and an excellent laptop.

It's all about preference, buying power and usage.

Do you really need a 3000 buck laptop? I mean if it costs that much and has that much stuff in it, it is gona be huge and heavy. Will you want to take it to classes, because if its that heavy you won't.

would higher priced computers last longer? What if I dont plan on using the laptop for gaming, could I just buy a laptop under 1k and plan for it to last throughout 4 years?

I wouldnt buy a new laptop UNDER 1k but I certainly wouldnt buy one like that for 3000.

if you get good laptop (like an IBM thinkpad, not a dell) in the 1000-2500 range, there should be no problem with it lasting all 4 years (I reccomend a T42)

higher priced laptops are sometimes lighter, the cheaper ones seem bulky..
