One way to give yourself more choices is if you have a safety that you like more than any other and to which you are guaranteed admission. The “really like” part is paramount. If you identify three safeties: A, B, and C, and A would be your top choice among those AND you have guaranteed admission to A, then why bother with B and C. That frees up two slots for high matches. My son used this approach to apply to a single safety, two matches, and the rest high matches and reaches.
And definitely look inside yourself to see if your work with the dog rescue group inspires an essay.
^an issue is that some private universities use yield protection, so high stats applicants will be rejected from their safety for not showing sufficient interest. It’s always best to have 2 affordable safeties in case something goes wrong.
Agreed 1000%. It only works when there is guaranteed admission. I guess not every state offers those. The scenario I was imagining was a student in California with guaranteed admissions to a UC. If that student identifies three safeties and decides that his clear favorite of those safeties is UC Merced, then there’s really no reason to spend money sending applications to the other two. Another situation is if a student’s safety is to go to community college. Many California students with guaranteed UC admissions don’t even check the Merced box on the UC application and just apply to their match and reach campuses knowing that they have the safety of either Merced or CC.

Sent my daughter Mary Suzanne to Jacksonville State U. she’s studying international business and marketing. great kid. they don’t come any smarter! My advice? Get a good test prep book and read it hard. Practice critical thinking. I have the phone number of a colleague in Wichita business school. I can message u and give u inside scoop. College is hard. believe me, I know! Got a son at KSU! Geez.
