hi! my D (currently a junior in h.s.) is considering three summer theatre programs--BUSTI, Theatrebridge, and Yale Summer Conservatory. if she were to be accepted at all three, i would really appreciate any insight on the pros/cons of the programs, especially as they relate to preparing a student for a full-time drama conservatory after high school graduation, and any particularly wonderful/horrific stories anyone would care to share about their child's experience at any of these programs. thank you in advance!!!

First suggestion: definitely read through recent and older threads, as there’s a lot of info in here about summer pre-college programs! Just a few threads down the page from this you can find one just about BUSTI, and there are several contributors (including me) whose kids went to it in 2012. I’ve had several students go to Theatrebridge–seems pretty different–have read online about Yale’s summer program but have no direct experience.

I can tell you that BUSTI is a fantastic experience in many, many ways and provided superb preparation for both auditioning and considering a BFA program. The curriculum is essentially the first quarter of the BFA freshman year, condensed into 5 weeks, and aside from a curfew the kids are expected to conduct themselves as independently as college students. It was truly transformative for my son and I will always be glad we made the choice (and could afford) to send him! I feel much more confident about sending him to a rigorous BFA program in the fall knowing he had this experience, and I think it had a strong impact on his academic work as well.

thanks so much for taking the time to share your insight with me, Times3–my D and i really appreciate it!

My daughter attended Theaterbridge last summer and it really expanded her horizons . It was exhaustive and demanding, but rewarding. Emphasis seemed to be on playmaking and expressive dance. She made many friends, I think some of who may remain lifelong friends. The class was very tight and stays in touch. The professors have been helpful in the college search. She loved the professors and the Brown undergrads that served as their RA’s. My only regret is she may have attended too soon - Since having this great experience, high school for her now seems even more claustrophobic.

I’m surprised NU is not on your list - have you looked in to Cherubs?
