Need advice in NY State

momcinco – I don’t know if your D is still considering Conn College and Lafayette, but I can give you a little first-hand information regarding Lafayette, as my elder daughter is a senior there. Lafayette was meeting 100% of financial need at the time my daughter entered her freshman year and they are still honoring that commitment. We have been very pleased that as tuition has increased so too has her need-based grant. Now a couple of years ago Lafayette pulled back from the 100% pledge due to the impact of the economy on the school’s endowment. They still meet 100% of need for most students, but the last 5% of the class selected may not have full need met. I believe the most recent CDS states that Lafayette meets 98.8% of need, which is not bad.

I can also say that my daughter’s admissions counselor said that they really don’t look at NYS Regents exam scores unless there is a real disconnect between Regents exam scores and grades (such as a consistent A student who has a lot of Cs and Ds on the Regents exams). From what you’ve described I don’t think you’ll have a problem. I’ve also done some work with students who have failed at least one Regents exam who were still admitted to Geneseo and Binghamton, as well as some pretty highly regarded private schools both in NYS and out-of-state. These kids have all had a lot of other factors going in their favor obviously, but the point is you can fail a NYS Regents exam and not be doomed to a mediocre list of college acceptances.

I think with an A- average and 1200 SAT scores your daughter would have no reason not to apply to Lafayette if she felt it was a good fit.
