Need Advice! In-state Oklahoma vs UVA vs BU for CS

Should I stay instate (The University of Oklahoma) paying around 7k/year or go to the University of Virginia or BU for both around 20k / year? Is the extra money worth the prestige? Major: Computer Science.

sry my math was off … is 52k (plus extra travel costs) a lot to your family?

Add travel costs to the total too.

Would loans be taken?

BU and UVA are great schools but not known as CS powerhouses.

If you wanted to go I’d pick BU. Easier to get too, Boston is great, and lots of tech and internships/jobs but expensive COL.

That is with travel cost! Direct expenses are both around 14-16k

why 52k?

I’d try not to get loans, my parents can only put around 9k sooooo the rest is up to me which doesn’t sound that realistic I think?

Confused - is it $7K OU vs. $52K to BU or UVA? If so, OU - and don’t look back. The others are superior - but not $45K a year x 4 years superior.

4 * (Cost of UVA (20) - Cost of UO (7)) = 52?

No. It’s 7k for OU and 20k to BU or UVA. so 13k difference a year.

Right Right, uhmmm well its a pretty large amount but if it’s worth long term then I think it can be manageable.

Loans or can your parents pay for it WITHOUT debt?
Debt sucks …

If cost is not a concern, I would pick UVa. Their CS grads do well. In part because of all the jobs in and around DC. Boston offers a lot too but BU would always be behind Harvard, MIT, and maybe others in the pecking order there.

You would pick up some loans, but they may be manageable.

I was going to say that it was getting close … and paying extra to just get GTHO of Oklahoma is money well spent

So…let’s use $20k/year for all-in COA x 4 years = $80k - $36k (parents) - $27 (fed loans) = $17k over 4 years that you need to come-up with so let’s say $5k/year you’re short.

Did you get the federal loans?
Are your parents sure they can do $9k/year for all four years? Have they saved this or is it cash flow? What if something changes in years 2, 3, or 4?
Can you make $5k/year? My son worked PT during HS. It’s tough. Be realistic.

Are you set on CS or maybe something else? Major could make a difference.
How good was your HS? Where do you fall in the GPA/SAT averages for BU and UVA? If you’re in the lower half your risk would increase. If you’re in the upper half it might be worth the gamble.

The safe play here is go to Ok and be happy you have no debt.

Great points! Those same questions you asked are the questions I’m asking myself. In my head, it sounds easy making 5k a year but CS is very rigorous so I have to be realistic.

Lol that might be true until I have to pay 500k for a house worth 200k over here xD

Cost is the main concern, my EFC is 7683 just so you know roughly what I’m working with. Also at OU I have leadership opportunities such as PLC.

500k sounds cheap for a house …
if you went to UVA, how much debt would you have after graduation?

I mean, I don’t know lol whatever I can’t end up paying ill use loans which I don’t know what that will be.

I am not any type of expert with financial aid but I thought UVA meets full need. Maybe someone else could help.
