Need advice of which are the best colleges for my choice of major

Im an international student just starting the college search process and whoa! Its huge! Its so confusing.
So i was wondering if you all could help me out on which colleges are best reputed for an economics major and..maybe a chemistry/physics major too?(Im not sure yet..but it'll probably be a double major).
Thanks! :)

These are such typical majors that you should probably start first with thinking about whether you are willing to consider a liberal arts college or will focus on larger universities. Then try to get a sense of academic quality. The Fiske guide provides academic ratings on a 1 to 5 scale which helps to compare the academic quality of liberal arts colleges with universities. Or you can look at College ******* which gives A+, A, A- ect. for academics. Then you have to see which of the schools with high academic ratings will be possible with your stats. You can pretty much look down the U.S. News rankings which show median scores and find schools where your scores are at least in the middle of the median range. When you have 15-20 schools that are interesting and possible you can look at their websites and search on CC for comments about departments.

Every international student should start out by reading all (and I do indeed mean all) of the information at [EducationUSA | Study Abroad, Student Visa, University Fairs, College Applications and Study in the U.S. / America](http://www.educationusa.state.gov/) Then you should make an appointment with the counselors at the advising center closest to you. If you can’t visit in person, find out if they can help you via email or telephone. They are the experts on helping students from your country find good places to study in the US. You also should contact the consulates of other countries where you might like to study to find out what similar services they offer. For example, in Venezuela, Canada and the US share an advising center.

Be sure to sit down with your parents and whoever else it is who will be helping you to pay for your education to find out just exactly how much money will be available. Don’t forget to identify at least one option in your home country in case you don’t get into a college or university in the US that you can afford.

Wishing you all the best.

Before an int’l student starts making lists, he first needs to determine his financial situation.

If your parents can’t pay full freight, then only some schools will work.

Is money an issue?

*However,In India even my parents have this notion that we shud pursue UG in India and PG abroad because to spend all ur parents money in just UG id foolishness.Even im looking for aid…however im looking at only ivies/elite so if i get in,im safe.

…
Hence it is not very encouraging for the parent (my mum is not going 2 let me apply unless i get 800’s on subject tests nd atleast 2300 on SAT1).*

I think you’re wrongly assuming that if you get into an ivy that your financing will be taken care of. Ivies will look at your parents income/assets and decide what THEY should pay - even if they don’t want to.

It sounds like your parents have a good income/assets, but don’t want to pay much for undergrad.

And, since money is an issue for you…simply asking for schools to apply to will only result in people suggesting a bunch of unaffordable schools.

how much will your parents pay? Would schools likely expect them to pay more than they’re willing?

Im so so sorry for replying so late! I have just noticed that you all replied to my post. That is weird because it did not show up in my control panel.I apologise again and thank you all for taking the pains to help me out! :)

Hitch123-Yes I refered to the Fiske guide from the Usief library. It was great! Thanks for the tip!

Mom2collegekids-I remember you from that other thread! Yes I shall be applying for full financial aid and more than qualify for it.My mom’s a school teacher and she’s also a single parent.I am basically looking at the ivies because they have a huge endowment from what i have heard and 4 of them are need blind.
Can you suggest some good schools that give substantial amt of financial aid?Right now im looking at Dartmouth,Yale,Grinnel,Princeton,Tufts and Brown maybe.
Im leaning toward dartmouth and may apply early. The only thing thats hoding me back from applying early there is the 'famous partying ’ lifestyle ive heard is prevalent there. Thanks for your advice!
