Need Advice

I am about to be a senior this year, and I need some advice on taking certain classes and the choice on colleges. I really want to use my last year of highschool to prepare me well for taking college courses and the MCAT.

I am considering taking Biochemistry. Is it really tested on MCAT? Or is it better to take gen. chemistry again to reinforce my chemistry knowledge.

Also, does the college reputation matter for med school? Do you guys think that if I attend LSU I will hurt my chances into med school when compared to Tulane University?

One last Q: Do you guys think that double majoring in Biomedical Enginnering and Accouting will increase my chances in med. school admission. or should I take just Biomedical Enginnering?

Thanks for the advice!!

Your HS offers biochem? Yes college-level biochem is helpful for the mcat. Do not repeat a HS science course; take physics or bio or something else.

Tulane undergrad would probably give you a leg up if applying to Tulane med, but other than that, undergrad college will not matter.

BME is particularly difficult. Engineering in itself is difficult, and usually a grade killer. Major in what you like.

bluebayou: I am not very strong in HS chemistry. Wouldn’t be prudent to increase your chemistry knowledge before College?

Thanks !

^^yes it is definitely prudent to strengthen your chem background, but not by repeating a HS course (which looks bad for college admissions). Does your HS offer honors Chem? Or AP? Or can you take an Introductory Chem course at a local community college? How about Intro Chem over the summer? (Some Univ of California campuses offer a 2 unit Intro Chem course for those who are weak in Chem, for example; essentially, it is equivalent to HS honors course.)

Your goal needs to be to major in what you want and what you’ll get the best GPA in. Stop the hand-wringing about which college will give you a “leg up”.

Your GPA, MCAT, and ECs are what matters. I wouldn’t recommend going to some unranked school that no one has heard of and has crappy science programs, but LSU is fine for pre-med. Any flagship is fine for pre-med.
