Let me start off by saying I currently live in Colorado, and will be applying to UC Berkeley, Colorado School of Mines, and CU Boulder this fall. I am fairly confident getting into both CU Boulder and Colorado School of Mines. I am very interested in Mines, as it is currently my top choice. My question is if anyone has any experience with Mines, what is its reputation around the country, I know it has a very prestigious reputation in Colorado, but I’m not sure if that is the same case in other states. Also, I wanted advice if I happened to get into both Berkeley and Mines, which one would you recommend attending?
Berkeley and Mines have very different social scenes and vibes. Where would you feel more comfortable? Which is a better fit for you?
Will your parents pay the OOS fees of $55k+ per year to go to Berkeley? The UCs give very limited scholarships to OOS students.
I would definitely prefer the smaller size of Mines, for the size of classes and the size of the campus as well. I have visited Mines and I love size of the classrooms and the faculty to student ratio seem to fit my learning style.
Honestly, I will have to take student loans for both, but Mines would be much easier financially. This makes me lean toward Mines even more now. The only thing I am worried about is finding a job out of state after I graduate.
Mines has a good national reputation for the fields of study that it specializes in. Don’t worry about that. If you are concerned about placement for a specific major or in a specific industry, contact the Career Center at Mines, and ask the people there.
Thank you! I feel reassured now that if I choose to go to Mines I won’t regret it.
You should reassess whether Berkeley should even be on your list. As a student you can only borrow $5500 as a freshman, topping off at $7500 as a junior and senior. Your parents would need to take out loans for the rest. Mines is a very good school.

You can only do that if your PARENTS are dumb enough to cosign the big loans. Will your parents QUALIFY to cosign $200k of loans for you to go to Berkeley? (hopefully, they’re a lot smarter than that).
YOU can only borrow $5500. Is that enough for Mines? If not, then how would you cover the rest?
What are your stats?
As I began a college search with my D, we came across Mines…and looked at it very briefly. It did not have her program, so we moved on. I had forgotten about it since I went to college three decades ago. I have never worked with anyone from Mines, but I am in the IT field, and that is not one of their specialties, I do not believe. They are VERY good in some areas of course…so if your desired program is one of their specialties, you will be good.
And, figure out what you can spend before continuing your search.
