Can someone explain what does term "need-aware financial aid" mean? What's difference from "need-blind"?

Schools that are need blind do not consider whether or not your will need financial aid to attend. Your having a financial need whether it is $1 or the entire cost of attendance, or whether you are full freight paying will not be a factor in the admissions process. Most schools are need blind, even though most of them do not meet 100% demonstrated need.

Schools that are need aware or need sensitive will consider how much a student needs to attend. For US citizens and Permanent Residents, this usually happens towards the end of the admissions cycle and schools come close to exhausting their budget. In this case, when it comes to 2 similarly qualified students, the student who needs less of the school’s resources will get the tip.

When it comes to international students, approximately 10 schools in the country are both need blind and meet 100% demonstrated need. The ability to pay, is a factor in the admissions process as students will have to demonstrate that all 4 years can be paid through institutional aid, parent, the student’s home government, banks, etc before a visa is granted.

Sybb,
Which are those 10 schools?

My bad Jym, it is not even 10

Harvard
Yale
Princeton
Dartmouth
MIT
Amherst

Williams and Middlebury used to be need blind but recently revised their policies. However, they will meet 100% demonstrated need for students that they do admit.

Swarthmore is also need blind.

Some schools have do “enrollment managing”…and this applies to all applicants. The schools look at the student need and try to make sure they have enough students who will be able to pay the costs. These are need aware schools.

Nursekay…the list in post #4 are schools that are BOTH need blind and meet full need for ALL INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS.

There are a bunch of other schools that are need blind…in fact MOST colleges are need blind. There are also a bunch more that meet full need for all accepted students.

There are only six schools (listed above) that do both for all admitted INTERNATIONAL students.

Yes…Swarthmore is need blind (so are most schools) but Swat does NOT meet full need for all admitted INTERNATIONAL students. It is very clear on their website that financial aid for international students is “limited” and is offered to about twenty students a year.

Swarthmore is not need blind for international students.

from their website International students FAQs

Good clarification for internationals interested in Swat…not need blind AND does not guarantee to meet full need for this group.

Thanks, sybs.

can someone give me some colleges that require less than 100 in toefl and still give 100%aid

All you have to do is check the websites of the 6 or so listed schools…those are the ones that are need blind and meet need for int’ls…check to see which have that minimum toefl req’t.
