Rice has been my dream school for years but my family’s EFC is too high so I don’t receive any need based aid. My parents are divorced and gawk at the idea of paying almost 60k a year because it’s not like they’re anything close to rich. We’re just stuck in the middle and stuck paying full price. If you have under a certain income than your tuition is basically free, and if you make over 300k paying is not that big of a deal, but right it the middle seems to suck. Any ways to offset the cost besides loans and small scholarships?
I’m assuming that you’ve already been accepted to Rice, which if you have, congrats, if you haven’t then you probably don’t know Rice’s policy that they will pay 100% of your need. What that means is that your family only pays whatever your EFC is and if your FA letter doesn’t signal that(if you’ve gotten one that is) then you need to look over your FASFA and have a talk with Rice.
Both my girls got into Rice last year and our financial offer was unaffordable. We are stuck in the middle too. They went somewhere more affordable in the end and it all worked out beautifully. Their original dream school was an Ivy, and they were accepted but couldn’t afford it. I’m sorry - there isn’t an easy answer here but I can tell you, they could not be happier where they are now - a new and affordable dream school. Hopefully you have an affordable “dream school” too.
