I need ideas for something to put in this fireplace that we will never use as such. Right now, there is a grate for holding wood as well as one of those mesh screens that pull closed like a curtain. I can remove those - at least the grate.
Would you do fairy lights in lanterns? If so - how many lanterns and what heights/sizes/finish? A plant (would have to be fake)? A sculpture? Faux candles on a candelabra? Our home has a bit of a mid-century modern vibe to it. I don’t want anything that is a booger bear to clean/dust. We also live in Florida if that makes a difference with what you might suggest. Everything in our home is very neutral in light tans, gray, etc. There is color in our art and a few kiwi green accents. Mottled green area rug in this room as well. Right now, it’s just a black hole.
The shape of the firebox itself is a trapezoid, such that the back is narrower than the front. The back is only about 20” wide while the front is about 28” wide. The depth is around 13”, and the height is 21”.
One of my daughters had a non-working fireplace and filled it with white pillar candles of different heights (they are candles that are about 3 inches wide/round). When lit, the ambiance was really nice. I cannot recall if any were on stands, but that would allow for more varying heights.
I love these ideas! @soozievt you are a fabulous shopper for us CC folks!
I do use my wood burning fireplace so I don’t have the flexibility of some of these great ideas in warm weather (I just clean out best I can and use remote control pillar candles for ambiance in the summer). I also have mid century/transitional decor so I like the statement this screen makes. Just another idea that may work if you want it to be a focal point.
What does the hive mind think of this one? I like that it is more contemporary, and that there seems to be space to work in greenery around it for holiday time.
Birch logs AND fairy lights. You can even add some good fake greenery for the holidays or a lantern or two depending how busy you want it. Birch logs I think would look good with your MCM look
Where do I buy birch logs?? I see I can order them on Amazon - lol. Wondering if I could buy them locally in a store?? What kind of store would I look in??
My daughter got hers at either Trader Joe’s or a local garden store! You MIGHT also be able to get them like at Hobby Lobby or Micheal’s or a large craft store.
Our fireplace can’t be used for wood burning…same issue…chimney wasn’t designed for that. We have a gas log…it looks very nice. And we have a simple screen in front.
If I didn’t have the gas log, I might consider the candles (I would get the battery powered ones).
You are right about the range of prices with flameless remote candles! I’ve ordered from Amazon and purchased from places like Bed Bath and Beyond over the years. I have Luminaras and similar less-expensive “knock-offs” and notice no meaningful difference.
The main differences could be battery life and quality. I just bought a set of no-name flameless candles from Amazon, and the remote that came with it does not work at all. My husband can fix pretty much anything electrical. He suspects the remote is a dummy and wants to take the candles apart to see if there is in fact a remote operated switch inside.
