Need FAFSA help!

Due to some family crises, we are just now getting to the FAFSA. I know we already missed the Jan 1 deadline for some school admissions, too. So, any last minute advice on how to get started? Also, I am a single parent making about 65K per year, we rent, and own literally nothing. No savings etc. I have my own business but pay myself though a payroll service as an employee. I have my personal tax returns but no business ones. Where does anyone think this will put us for financial aid? Thank you so much.

Just get out last year's tax returns and fill out the form online, using the old figures as a basis for estimating 2005 figures -- you will be able to file a "corrected" FAFSA in February or March after you have final figures. There is a worksheet you can print out to gather the information. It is not complicated -- just fill it all out, and submit - then it will tell you your EFC.

Yes, it's pretty straightforward and the telephone helpline people are supportive and helpful if you have questions.

If you want an idea of what your EFC will be, then go check out one of the estimators. I prefer the one at collegeboard.com.

Don't worry about not getting the FAFSA done by the 1st. You couldn't even file it before the 1st. You're in good shape.
