My only worry about the University of Tampa is that the level of academics isnt what I’m looking for. However, I’m open to new ideas, and I’d like to know what kind of student the girl you mentioned was. Personally, the students I know who go to Tampa are not very strong, but I may have a skewed perspective.
The student I knew was a very strong student from a very strong suburban HS.
You need a LOT of aid to attend a private university. To garner $30,000 in merit aid, you are going to need to look at schools where you ar at the top of their applicant pool. So…you may have to look at less competitive schools as part of your application mix.
Sure…apply to places like U of Miami, and Wake…but you are likely not at the top of their applicant pool. Maybe you will get the aid you need…and maybe you won’t.
Then I’ll definitely give Tampa a look. I’ve always enjoyed the city of Tampa, as well. Thank you!
Check out Elon University (private, North Carolina).
I apologize if you’ve said this already and I missed it: are you a boy or a girl? I ask because I know of a women’s college in the south that might interest you (if you’re female!).
I’m sorry but I’m not a girl, but thank you anyways!
If Atlanta interests you at all, look at schools that are members of the Atlanta Regional Council for Higher Education. Students at one school can take some coursework at other member schools, and one member school, Agnes Scott College, has a very good Asian studies program.
Also, are you interested in continuing your sport? You say you are ‘unrecruitable’ but you might be surprised. U Tampa is D2, gives scholarships, and you might enjoy continuing your sport. Other suggestions are Lynn, Florida Southern, High Point, New College of Florida,U of South Florida (in Tampa).
Getting Chinese at a high level is going to be difficult at a smaller school. Someone upthread recommended Wyoming. Surprisingly strong exchange program with China and international politics, but not south of the Mason/Dixon.
It sounds like you’re guessing or assuming what your parents will pay.
PLEASE ask them so that you’re dealing with REAL numbers.

I’ve taken the ACT, but I only got a 29. I

That’s about equivalent to what you got on the new SAT.
I think you should retake BOTH exams. AND find out from your parents how much they’ll pay
By the way, my DD1 ‘liked’ the SAT better but wasn’t able to raise her score on retest - however worked on ACT prep and did raise her score on ACT. However many kids get stuck on ACT 29 composite - you have to work to improve your strong areas as well as your weak areas.
The real numbers on what your family will assist with on a yearly basis, your test score situation, and your own personal preferences. Make sure you apply to enough schools that are good possibilities for you to afford.
Can always visit later in the year to make your final selection.
You and your family will be happier when you can select a school that is within budget. You don’t want to have student loans with UG if can be avoided. And it may end up being close to home and actually a state school. The interest in a strong Chinese program is a limiting factor for you.
@hearroroym You should definitely get a firm commitment from your parents about how much they are comfortable paying, then review college websites’ scholarship info, in detail. It does not make sense to apply to colleges where you are not competitive for merit awards which will get you to the price you need to pay, and many schools offer no/very limited merit. Filling out applications and writing good essays take time, and that effort should be focused on applying to colleges which meet both your academic and financial needs. Generally, here on CC, I see recommendations to be in the upper 25%ile of accepted students’ stats to have a chance of receiving merit aid, and be in the upper 5-10% to have a shot at any larger merit scholarships offered. If your stats are average/low compared to other admitted students, your chances for big merit are very low.
One of my daughters applied to Wake Forest U hoping for some merit$$. Her stats were much higher than yours, with very good ECs, awards, etc. 2230 SAT (1480 CR+M, old SAT), 35ACT, and she did not receive any merit$$ at all from WFU. They did meet 100% of her need, but with other kids in college/high school and an EFC we could not afford, we were on the hunt for full tuition scholarships.
It is not in the South, but I suggest looking at Ursinus College in PA, a lovely LAC outside of Philadelphia, and one of the Colleges That Change Lives (CTCL) schools. They recently announced a new scholarship program called the Gateway Scholarship, a $30 K award for meeting certain minimum stats and HS curriculum requirements(28 ACT, 1260 SAT) , if admitted. They also have number of other scholarships. They have the academic areas you are interested in, including Chinese language.

How much your parents will pay matters. You need to find that out. If it’s less than your EFC, you need to find a school that gives merit aid for your stats.
For Chinese programs in the south look at University of Mississippi, University of North Georgia, and Westerm Kentucky University. These are three of 12 Chinese Flagship programs in the US. Ole Miss’ COA is 35000, WKU 37,000, and UNG $33,000. All prices are before any scholarships.
