Need Help ASAP: Moving In

Hi,
I need to get organized for moving in days, and I need help. My parents and I want to go a day early for several reasons. Freshman are to arrive on campus on the 29th, but my parents and I want to leave on the 27th and take an overnight flight. This will allow us to spend the 28th going to IKEA, checking out the area, etc. without crowds and my parents have to be back home by that Friday evening, so they will be leaving on the 29th in the morning (probably right after they drop me off at 9 AM, I believe).

I'm flying from the LAX, and I need suggestions on the following:
1)I need help finding airlines. I was thinking Tweed would be a good option (we don't mind the three connecting flights) since it is only a 15 min cab ride away, but I have been suggested not to do that b/c it is more expensive.

So, I'm not sure where to fly into. I will be bringing in all of my clothes, books, etc. but my furnishings are already at Yale. My main concern is that, if we don't take Tweed, we won't be able to fit everything in a train.

2) Should we rent a car? My parents don't want to do this, but it seems necessary. One of my roommates will have her mom there with a car in case we need anything for a few days.

3) Should I bring everything with me via plane? My parents are for this idea, but I don't know. Would it be cheaper to just bring 1 suitcase with things for a week and ship everything else via UPS?

4) My parents and I were planning to stay at the Omni for Thursday night. When we go to IKEA, etc. and buy some of the larger things (such as a lamp), would it be a good idea to just store them at the Omni for the night until we can move in on Friday. I will be alone basically moving in b/c my parents will be on their way home by that point. How can I transport everything from the hotel room to wherever? I heard that you basically just have to put your stuff in a pile (?) or in a car with your room number/residential college sign, and people move it for you. But I don't know how to even get all my things to the college...

Thanks a million. I'm really lost right now. I'm going to post in this in the parents' forum too because I think they might have some great insight for this too.

Rent the car. It's 2 blocks from the Omni to the closest college on Old Campus - too far to schlep by foot if you've got lots of stuff.

You also need a car to get to IKEA from the Omni.

It also offers the fastest "dump and run" option for your parents on Friday am.

On another note - I'd bring as much as possible by plane. You don't want to wait a week before transforming your room into your new home.

We just bought our tickets and rented a car. Thank you! :)

D is rising Jr. We're from Sant Barbara and have used many routes to get there in the last two years. We found Hartford to be most convenient. New York brings it's own traffic misery. Driving back to catch a plane in traffic that will remind you of home will cure the folks of that. Tweed requires the tranfers you mentioned. Hartford is large enough and small enough to have good facilities and flights. Renting a car is a must. I see that you have. Pay the extra at the Omni for parking. Boy, are you ever right about getting to IKEA early. BIG crowds. We needed car for multiple trips to other stores from office supply to linens and other basics. Seemed to be about $500 a store. A word of encouragement next: you will have roommates and older students all around you. There will be parents there with cars who's only mission is to serve. We were delighted to help a girl from Korea with her needs. We almost had to toss a coin with the other 'rents to see who would get to help. Boy, are you in for a great time. You will be sort of happy the folks leave (can't believe I'm saying this) because you will be immediately swept up by your new friends. Sorry to go a bit off topic but I thought these tidbits might be helpful.

Sorry to ask this question. What is IKEA? We basically decided to drive to Yale (about 20 hours driving).

A great furniture/furnishings store that's really cheap but still has lots of style.

HandsAcrossTime: Renting a car is good from hartford because of package deals. Work with your airline. If you link flights w/car rental sometimes ridiculous deals can be had. Last time I was in New Haven (for six days), my total car rental cost was only $120! If I'd taken the shuttle in from Hartford, it would have cost me $50 alone.

Even though you've alreaady booked your car, call your airline co. and see if they have any extra deals that you can bundle w/your flights.

With the new rules about paying for bags aboard aircraft, you might want to look into what's economical. UPS might be the better option.

Best of luck to you. Drink in New Haven and Yale!
