Hey guys so I'm currently applying to colleges right now (I'm a high school senior) and I'm having a lot of trouble choosing a major...I'm a huge fan of biology but I'm fully aware that Biology is the most commonly chosen major for Pre-Med students. Also, it would be hard for me to stick out from the crowd of applicants when i'm applying to med schools.

I heard Biochemistry is a really good major for pre-med because it covers most of the prerequisites, but i'm concerned about this because i'm not a HUGE fan of chemistry...i managed to get a 4 on the AP chem exam and a 710 on my SAT IIs but my love for bio definitely dominates my interest in chem (which honestly isnt alot). so would i end up hating/having difficulty with biochem if i majored in it?!

i know everyone asks this question on CC lol i spent a good two hours or so looking up all of the "which major should i choose for pre-med" threads, but i still can't make up a decision :(

and i already know people can get away with applying to med school with a degree in any major, i'm just not interested in any majors other than the sciences (considering minoring in spanish and either english/psychology though)

ANY INPUT WOULD BE GREAT, THANKS :)

OH and p.s. do bio/biochem majors have a social life? i'm not looking forward to college solely for the parties and social scene, but it's still important to me so......

Bio, chem, physics, engineering, math–all students in these majors can have very active social lives if they make a decision to do so. One of the most important things you will need to be able to do in college and later on in medical school is balance your academics with your other interests and activities. This requires good study habits, but also maturity, self-discipline and good time-managements skills. Valuable things to have/acquire regardless of whether you go to med school or not. These skills will serve you well for the rest of your life.

RE: Bio major. Major in bio if that’s where your interest lies. Yes, there are are tons of bio pre-meds, but mostly because there is strong overlap with the pre med requirements.

Don’t pick a major just to “stand out”. Unless you are an exceptional student (national fellowship winner, multiple time first author in Science or Nature) or have some other sort of exceptional EC (founded a international non-profit, Olympic athlete, Met opera star) you’re not going to stand out.

Your goal should be to be the best applicant you can be. Major in what you like. (Your grades will be better if you actually enjoy the field you’re studying.) Find an area of profound interest/passion and pursue it–both through coursework and more importantly through outside activities. Don’t try to follow someone else’s path to medical school–it won’t work for you. You have to find your own way, your own passions, your own reasons for doing this.

-So, what is a concern? Please, clarify.
