Scholarships, and I will take out some loans. I do have a job and some money saved up. It’s just all towards a used car rn. Saving up to get a car. Next is college
How much tuition did that cover for him? Also, where else did he apply?
We chased merit but ended up in state at FSU. Florida in state tuition is the cheapest or close to it in the nation
Just double checked Miami Ohio with him he got 21K merit and tuition was 36700
Iowa he got 14k tuition 31800
DePaul he got 22k tuition 40500
His matches Pitt, Penn State, zero merit, MSU a little, Marquette about a third of tuition
If you need merit you will get the most from your safeties
Maybe University of Tampa or Stetson in FL.
Still not sure how you are going to afford $22k. As others have said, you can only borrow $5500 a year unless your parents will co-sign. Are they willing to do that? You need to ask them now.
I also think you are overestimating how many outside scholarships you can get. A friend’s son with high stats and great EC’s applied to over 50 scholarships and ended up with about 4K. And they are one time scholarships, not renewable each year. You also need to add in travel costs to these states. Flights right now are very expensive and not expected to go down anytime soon.
Not sure why you think you will definitely get into your matches. Miami and Richmond are not easy admits for anyone. You have good grades and decent EC’s but nothing is guaranteed in college admissions. And Richmond gives very little merit except to the very top students.
There are a lot of PA LACs that would get you down close to $30k, but as @MAmom111 noted, not sure how you’re going to pay that. Ursinus, Susquehanna, Juniata, Allegheny are all options to look into. I’m partial to Allegheny, but my D has been happy at Susquehanna.
UNC Asheville is the first one that comes to mind for me. Lynchburg in VA would also be very good.
WVU is certainly a good option for you, separate and apart from financial issues. I have a friend whose son is a rising sophomore there, and he is having a great experience.
Also, I’m hearing multiple things about this loan. Some are saying $27,000 is the cap, some are saying $5,000. I’m not getting a definite answer about that
I really want to go to FSU, but I don’t think I’m gonna get it tbh. Miami Ohio may be a safety for me, but it’s more expensive than WVU. I’m also looking for more matches as well, but safeties matter more rn since I only have one.
$27,000 is the maximum you can borrow for undergraduate. It’s the total borrowing you can do across 4 years, not per year. On an annual basis it’s around $5500 per year for freshmen and sophomores and a little more (I think around $7500) your junior and senior years.
Listen, you’re taking my approach the wrong way. I never said I was “guaranteed” to get in. I said I think I have a good shot. That’s a difference. Especially since I have hooks and I may impress them with my essays.
They probably are gonna co sign because my mom said “WE can’t pay for that” when talking about a private school. And I am applying to LOCAL scholarships. Never said they were easy to get, but majority of my scholarships are coming from my SMALL (600 in the whole HS), RURAL school. That’s a pretty good chance. Please do not take words out of my mouth. I’m not delusional about this process. That’s why I’m trying to find safeties and matches that may work, but I want to see what I get. I want to see ALL of my options. Whether it’s local, a well-known school, LAC. IDC. I have fee waivers as well from research and attending events so if I want to apply to U Richmond and see what I get, then I will. But U Richmond obviously isn’t a safety, I put them as a high match. Sorry if this sounds rude, I just want people to understand my POV.
Well, my mom said “We” can’t pay for that when I was talking about a local private college, so she must know about this loan stuff since she screwed over my sister a nd put her in debt.
Susquehanna is always reaching out to me, so I’ll look into them.
Why do you say UNC Asheville. I was looking into the UNC sub campuses. I have heard of Lynchburg as well, so I’ll look into them
I’m trying to learn more about WVU, but it sounds really great. It’s my most affordable option as well. I did hear that they raise tuition a lot, though. So I’m trying to find out how often they do that and how much it raises. I’m super interested in this school and Duquesne
The max federal loan you can take total $27,000 for all four years total.
$5500 freshman year
$6500 sophomore year
$7500 junior year
$7500 senior year
You need to check to see if these scholarships from your HS are renewable for all four years of college.
Also, any scholarships you receive not from the college MUST be reported to the college. In most cases, the outside scholarship will reduce your financial need, and therefore reduce your need based aid.
There are some colleges that will allow you to stack scholarships up to a certain amount…but you need to check to see if this is even possible at the schools you are looking at. It might not be.
If she put your sister in debt, I assume she co-signed for loans. All a student can borrow on their own, total, is $27,000. Anything more requires a co-signer.
I think WVU stacks scholarships. Not too sure. They said they accept scholarships from outside of their school and from my state.
I’ll see if they’re renewable. Most likely not since it’s a small school, but I could still earn 10-12k. They have a lot of 1,000-4,000 scholarships. I’ll ask my guidance counselor once they open up.
Ya, she co-signed. I just think she didn’t give my sister the FASFA information. Now my sister is in debt. This was all for CC 9community college).
