Need help identifying high matches/low reaches...

State: Texas
Gender: Female
Race: White

GPA/Rank: This is messed up right now. At the moment, my school has me at a 3.6 UW and a 3.5 W and 37/290. Obviously, this is incorrect. I re-calculated it, and based on the results mine should be between a 3.78 and a 3.82. It just depends on if they count newspaper staff and the government courses I took this summer. This will put me either just outside of or just in the top 10% of my class. I doubt it will put me into the top 8%.

SAT (first attempt; retaking): M:560, CR:560, W:650 (1770 composite)

Can you help me identify some high matches/low reaches for if my test scores stay where they are AND for if they go up?

Bump!
Thanks in advance…

well, obviously if you can get within the top 8%, UT Austin is your match. Otherwise, your stats match to most schools in the USNWR 80-120 range, and some reaches in the 60-80 range. If you can get above 1200 on SAT or 27+ on the ACT, just move up both ranges by 20. I’m sure you know this but under 600 on both parts of the SAT are a real issue. You still have two or three more tries at both the SAT and ACT this fall if you have time … you might just have a great day and get 27 on the ACT or 1200 on the SAT and make your application a lot stronger.

Honestly all those ECs are not a big factor. If you need to cut back some on the ECs to focus on testing and grades, that would be a good way to go. ECs are only a tie-breaker between to equally statted candidates.

Thanks for the input.

Also, I’ve already been accepted at the University of Alabama, the University of Arkansas, and Mary-Hardin Baylor. So, if anyone was going to suggest those… don’t. Haha!

What are you looking for? Size of school? Are you trying to stay in the south? Urban/rural/surburban? What kind of culture? What are your academic interests/career goals?

Without more specific information, you’ll just get a lot of random schools tossed in your direction.

You have got to see your GC and straighten out the GPA issue immediately…it makes a big difference.

I’m looking for a mid-sized or large school preferrably in the south, but that isn’t a necessity. I’d also like to be in or near a big city or cool college town.

I plan to major in either advertising or marketing.

Also, the counselor fixed it and I’m at a 3.672, which I know is low. I’m not sure how this will effect my rank, but I know I’m not in the top 10%.

Wow, Alabama would be perfect and a blast for you. Seems perfect. That’s a great ace to have in the hole at this point.

If money is not a big issue, TCU and Baylor are both within match/reach, and SMU is a slight reach. I would only think SMU would be preferable to Alabama though.

Check out University of Charleston and Elon-both popular choices in our area for good students. And to see how ‘reachy’ they are, take a look at the Common Data Set for each school. Another possibility if a LAC in a city would appeal to you: Rhodes College in Memphis.

Elon looks very nice! I would have to raise my scores a bit, but I definitely might apply. I’ve looked at Rhodes a few times, but I just can’t decide if I should include it in my list.

I would also recommend University of Georgia.
In the South, great college town too.

As for Elon, you look similar to my brother (who is currently a Junior at Elon) in terms of stats. I think that you could have a very good chance there.

You also look like a good candidate for Wake Forest University. You have taken a rigorous course load and have been involved. Wake is SAT-optional, so I think it would certainly qualify as a a reasonable reach for you. Please PM me if you have any additional questions as I am a recent graduate of Wake Forest.

Thanks so much! I’ve actually looked at Wake Forest before, but the price is pretty intimidating. I will definitely PM you soon!
