Hey, while you’re buying show tickets, see if you can get tix to Once. It’s beyond fantastic. And, congratulations to your D on her internship and her decision to live at the Y. Commuting on a train will always be more pleasant than tackling driving. What a wonderful opportunity for her to experience NYC!

I second MommaJ - amazing!

Thanks MommaJ, sopranomom and Woody. I am an organized person, but I really had no idea where to even begin. It is the nice, helpful people on CC that made this easy. Once I looked at 92Y and they had room, it was an easy decision. I think the commute will be a pain, but weekends will make up for it. And it is a good thing for her to try living in Manhattan. That way when she interviews for summer internships (which hopefully will lead to a job), she will know whether to consider NY firms. I couldn’t have done this without the help here, so thanks!

Dumbo - I just saw this thread so have not had a chance to pipe in with my support of the Y idea. I live in the neighborhood, it is extremely safe, primarily families with some young people right out of college on side streets and college students at the Y and at the dorm for Baruch Hunter and Manhattan School of music on 97th and Lexington. A few words of advice - get her cheapie curtains even for 12 weeks. The cloth ones from target will work and she can purchase a rod with suction caps on each end at a local hardware store. Subway - as a lifelong new Yorkers I urge everyone - do not use a backpack on the subway. It as though there is another person on a subway. if your daughter goes the 125th St route she will be having a reverse commute on the subway so it won’t be too crowded. The subway stop is in the same place pretty much as the MetroNorth stop. No need to walk. There are always cop cars underneath the station (it’s elevated on 125st). I am pretty sure that the subway train uptown is also at the same place where the metro north train will let her out, I.e. There will be no reason to leave the train station to switch. if that is the case, it will make it for a very easy commute. She will want to go to 86St stop in the evenings b/c that is the first express stop from 125th St and also b/c there are alot of inexpensive dining options on and around 86 St. She must try Shake Shack! If she plans to cook, there is a very decent supermarket across the street from the Y that many in Carnegie Hill(her new neighborhood) use, as well as the famous Fairway on 86 bet. 2 and 3. Right across the street is a cleaner/bulk laundry place that is not bad. And kitty corner is sfoglia restaurant, for which you must make reservations when you visit. if she wants either prepared food or semi prepared and is homemmade she should go to Nonnas kitchen on 92 between Lexington and third. The area around the Y is much more populated and lively than a block away on Park and 92 due to the almost daily world class concerts and lecture series that take place there. One floor of the Y is taken by a private, impossible to get into preschool, where Woody Allen sent his kid with his stepdaughter Soon Ye. There are tons of cabs in the morning from ppl dropping off their kids, or at night from people getting out of cabs for concerts. As well cabbies know to be in the area after the shows. Most important of all your daughter needs to exercise common sense - do not walk down the street that is deserted at night, do not keep a wallet in a compartment easy to reach, do not open wallet on the street or in the subway, have a metro card and a few dollars available in a pocket, if a vagrant does come up to talk to her, politely walk away and never engage in conversations or look in the eyes. something that we were taught growing up in the 80’s was never stand too close to the platform edge due to possibility of someone disturbed that can push you over the edge. haven’t heard of many recent incidents of that, but it pays to be cautious. good luck to or daughter, what a exciting and funt time she will have. PM me if you need an more practical advice on the neighborhood.

mymm…thank you!!! I copied and pasted this and sent to my daughter. Especially appreciate the food/laundry suggestions.

I wanted to update everyone on D’s move. First, the 92Y is fantastic. Really appreciate the recommendation to live there. She has a large single with a big closet, and the room was very clean. It’s perfect! She has made some friends in the building, and so far, everything is great. She has quickly learned about trains and subways, and she is actually getting of at 125th St on the way home from work as well. She is getting off about 5 pm right now, and the first day of work (Monday) she went to GCS. It was swamped and took quite a bit longer. So she decided to try 125th st and see if she felt safe. She said there were a lot of commuters around, and police were very visible as well. Maybe when it starts getting dark earlier she will go to GSC, but for now, this seems to be working. If there is a New Yorker out there who feels this is not a good idea at this time, please let me know. Overall, she says NY is awesome! I never would have thought she’d love it. But so far, the commute is not bad (takes just over an hour) and she really likes her internship. I actually flew to NY with her to help her get settled, and we did see Book of Mormon. We loved it. We didn’t get a chance to see Once, but she is planning to see it. We did make it to Shake Shack, but not the other place. A huge thank you to all who helped! Everything worked out wonderfully.

Thanks for the update! Sounds fabulous!!

you can find tickets for Once at the Times Square TKTS booth.

nj2011mom, thanks for the idea. I will let her know!

We call the Shake Shack the “shake-down shack” because it is bloody expensive for what you get!

Sounds great! My D went to school in that area and traveled back and forth to visit us in CT. She regularly stopped at the 125th St. station, perhaps not late at night but certainly after sunset, and took a shuttle over to the west side from there. She says the station was always busy and she never felt unsafe.
