Housing Suggestions for Summer Internship in Manhattan?

My daughter has an internship in New York City (not far from Rockefeller Center in Manhattan), starting in the middle of July. I realize that it may end up being virtual, but we need to explore housing options if it ends up in person.

Does anyone have any experience (pro or con) with the Webster Apartments? They provide housing for females that have internships and provide dorm style living with single rooms and with meals provided.

Any other suggestions?

Try International House – apply now!! They fill up!!

It’s on Riverside Drive, and it’s a lovely location. She can take the D train from 125th quickly to Rockefeller center. Easy peasy.

Apply everywhere and then see what turns up–as things can get competitive in NYC.

Also look perhaps at dorms for CUNY – they may have summer housing available. Just google CUNY dorms.

Also around the major campuses people will put up flyers for summer sublets. This year is a little weird because COVID has emptied Columbia and NYU areas. But you may want to take a trip to theCity for a weekend (when we are getting out of our COVID “pause”) and look for flyers in those areas.

If she needs a short term rental, the following places have guest rooms:

Columbia University Teachers college

Union Theological Seminary

International house

Also IM me and I will see if my friend still has a room this summer. She tends to rent out. He’s a prof and she’s a journalist and they rent out their kids’ room while she’s away at school. The child has been away for breaks lately.

Webster is a well established place- clean, walking distance to Rock, safe. No men allowed above the lobby floor and some of the safety protocols are left over from the mid 20th century, but it’s a good option if you don’t have the luxury of a house-hunting visit to check it out.

Friend’s daughter stayed at the Webster several years ago. She wasn’t wild about the food but was happy with the location.

You will have a lot more options this summer because of Corvid. I would strongly suggest for her to get a place that’s walking distance to work with a kitchen. Even if things were to improve this summer, I would still stay away public transportation if possible, and able to cook majority of meals.

I know majority of people may continue to work remotely and a lot of young people have gone back to stay with their parents for more space. I think your daughter may be able to get a sublet easily.

I think many NYC college dorms may be closed this summer. As an example, Columbia has decided not to offer any summer housing this year even after approving some applicants.

Take a look at https://www.listingsproject.com/ Lots of summer sublets at good prices…

Columbia wasn’t offering housing this year way before the Covid outbreak. PACE offers fairly flexible summer housing but I agree that universities will probably not be available this year and also agree about public transport.

97th Street YMHA? Do they have openings and are they taking applications?

We know interns who have stayed there and have been happy.

It’s sort of walkable to Rockefeller Center…but it’s a long walk. I agree, getting a place that makes taking public transport not needed is a good idea.

Hello,
Thank you so much for all of the input and suggestions - I really appreciate it!

The Y is not walkable to 49th and 5th.
